‘Religion’and ‘character transformation’of the inmates has been internally connected just like the double side of the same coin. It has been undisputable that the correction and edification of the inmates are heavily influenced by people’s tendency to religiosity. It is demonstrated that the communities of the inmates were very dynamic since they were composed of multiple groups and their tendency has been unexceptionally religion-oriented. It should not be overlooked that religion paves the way for finding out the means for edification. Material affluence and modernization tend to change the value of the cultural life. Not only mere survival but also mental life accordingly is of importance in contemporary society. Considered in this way, a new strategy would be called for to properly understand the role and value of the edification of the inmates. In the paper I consider how religion can be served for the ways to edify the intimates on the basis of the edification model of Somangpenitentiary.

‘종교’와‘수용자의 내적변화’의 관계는 마치 동전의 양면과도 같다. 종교가 수용자의 교정·교화에 미치는 순기능은 의심의 여지가 없다. 왜냐하면 대부분 의 사람에게는 종교성이 있기 때문이다. 교도소 내 수용자 집단은 어느 사회 공 동체 못지않게 다양한 인격체로 구성된 역동적인 공동체이며, 종교성향은 이들 에게도 예외는 아닐 것이다. 이런 이유로 종교는 교화의 주요 수단으로 자리 잡 아 왔고, 앞으로도 그 역할과 영역은 결코 간과되지 않을 것이다. 사회가 경제적 으로 윤택해지고 현대화되면서 먹고사는 생존의 문제보다 삶의 가치체계를 존중 히 여기는 정신세계의 중요성이 점차 강조되고 있는 현 시점에서, 종교가 수용자 교화에 관한 역할과 가치를 지키기 위해서는 새로운 형태의 접근 전략이 필요하 다. 여기서는 교화의 주요 수단으로서 종교를 어떻게 활용할 수 있는지에 대한 접근의 일환으로 소망교도소 교화모델을 중심으로 살펴보고자 한다.
