This paper shall shed light on Arthur Danto”s conception of ‘internal beauty’, which is closely connected with the relationship between art and beauty. Beauty has been regarded as the essence of fine art since modern times. For example, both Kant and Hegel were interested in the intimate relation between fine art and beauty. However, beauty has been disappeared in contemporary disputes of art. Beauty is just one of the many modes in today’s discussion on art. In other words, it has no privileged place in art. This paper shall raise the following question: What, then, has any role of beauty in the discussion of art and how can we talk about it? To reply this question, I shall argue as what follows. 1. I shall compare Danto’s account of beauty in comparison with Kant and Hegel’s one. I shall maintain that sensible characteristics won’t fit to the essence of art. 2. I shall concentrate on Danto’s conception of internal beauty which is internal to the meaning of the work of art. It will be contended that internal beauty cannot be grasped by both the intention of the artist and free interpretations of the reader. In this respect the medium of the work of art is crucial to the understanding of internal beauty. 3. Finally, I shall show that the beauty of artistic creation is not restricted to the “sensible embodiment”but further extended to the value of life through the mediation of meaning, for the meanings of the work of art are always relative to the meanings of the world.

예술에서 아름다움은 절대적인 우위를 차지해 왔다. 현대 예술에서도 아름다움은 주요한 주제다. 하지만 지금까지와는 다른 뜻에서 주요한 주제가 되었다. 현대 예술에서 아름다움은 왕좌는커녕, 입지조차 희미해진 것처럼 보이기 때문 이다. 단토의‘내적 아름다움’논구는 오늘 날 예술 경향 안에서 아름다움을 자 리매김하려는 시도이다. 이 글은 내적 아름다움의 정체와 의의를 분명히 하기 위 한 것이다. 논의 전개에서 밝히고자 하는 바는 1) 아름다움을 비롯한 감성적 특 성은 더 이상 예술의 유일한 목적과 평가 척도가 아니라는 점이다. 이 과정에서 예술작품의 의미가 갖는 중요성과 예술의 지성적 측면이 강조될 것이다. 2) 예술 작품의 감성적 특성은 작품의 의미와 관련 맺고 있어야 한다. 이때 단순히 예술 가의 의도를 파악하는 것과 작품의 의미를 구분하고, 예술이 세계 상관적이라는 점을 논구한다. 3) 세계 상관성 맥락에서, 예술의 아름다움에 대한 평가가 현실 에 대한 소망 관점을 전제하고 있음을 밝힌다. 이때 아름다움은 예술의 선택적 양태를 넘어, 주요한 삶의 가치로서 중요성을 갖는다. 결론적으로, 내적 아름다 움 논구의 의의가 아름다움의 이중적 함의를 보여주는데 있음을 분명히 한다. 하 나의 예술적 양태로서 아름다움의 입지를 모색하는 것뿐 아니라, 다양하고 개방 적인 양상을 띠는 현대 예술 활동 전반은 아름다움이라는 포괄적 가치를 지향할 때 진정으로 다원적일 수 있다는 것이다.
