It has become common to talk about popularization of Humanities in contemporary society of Korea. The Education Ministry and the National Research Foundation of Korea have promoted to develop the business of humanities and the Humanistic City project, including several academic lectures for the general public. Especially the Humanistic City project has been common concern for both city and universities. It would be right to deal with the importance of humanities, for it would give us an opportunity to share the benefits of humanities for the public who are alienated. Since 2012, Suwon City embarked the project for the humanities-centered development of the city. It has been the moto of the local government and has shown many different aspects in different contexts. The project, I believe, has been successful, for it has given a chance to show that the Humanities project really works. In this article, I will show that this Humanities project has been successful in the case study of Suwon City. The article, which was originated from my own experience as a leading researcher in the workshop entitled as “Suwon si Humanities-centered City Plan,”is ordered as follows. First, I will show why we should start with the attention of the beginning level of city policy. Second, I will explain why the city humanities project should be able to solve the problems that the citizens of Suwon confront. Third, I will propose several practical cases which are useful to understanding the humanities project that can be practically worked. I find that academic events are not sufficient to make public the humanities. Nevertheless, we come to realization that the concerns for the normalized life of city community, such as happiness, safe, health, and justness of citizens are critically important to level up or enhance the civic life of community.

인문학의 대중화는 이제 시대의 화두가 되었다. 한국연구재단에서는 이러한 인문학 대중화 사업을 위해 시민강좌사업과 인문도시 사업 등을 추진해오고 있 다. 그 중에서도 인문도시 사업은 도시와 대학이 하나가 되어 인문학의 방향과 운영을 함께 모색하는 것으로 기획되었다. 이는 대학의 인문학을 도시의 시민들 이 골고루 혜택을 받을 수 있게 하는 계기를 마련했다. 수원시는 3년 전부터 교육부의 인문학 대중화 사업과는 별도로 지자체의 이념 과 시장의 신념에 의해 인문학을 중심에 놓는 도시정책, 즉 인문학 중심도시를 설계하고 시행해 왔다. 교육부의 사업과 수원시의 사업이 비록 서로 다른 맥락에 서 시도되었지만 그 지향하는 바는 인문학이 시민을 위한 것이 되어야 한다는 것 으로 수렴될 수 있다. 이 글은 논자가 수원시의 2014년부터 2018년까지의 <수원시 인문학 중심도시 추진계획> 용역과제의 연구책임을 맡으면서, 한 도시가 어떤 목적과 방향을 갖 고 시민을 위한 인문학 대중화를 실현할 수 있을 것인가에 대해 논의한 것이다. 이를 위해 수원시의 도시정책과 인문학 대중화의 관련성을 밝히면서, 첫째, 도시 의 인문정책은 시정 초기 단계부터 도시정책과 하나가 되어 실시되어야 함을 주 장했다. 둘째, 도시의 인문정책은 시민들의 행복을 위해 도시의 다양한 문제점을 해결하는 데 기여할 수 있어야 함을 지적했다. 셋째, 이러한 관점에서 인문학 사 업이 실제로 어떻게 이루어져야 할 것인가를 다양한 사례를 통해 제시했다. 인문학의 대중화는 한 도시의 공동체적 삶, 예를 들어 시민의 행복, 안전, 건강 또는 공정의식을 정상화시키는 데 일조해야 한다. 그리고 인문학이 단순히 대학 밖으로 나오는 것만으로는 만족해서는 안 되며 그것이 시민사회의 수준을 높이 고 나아가서는 시민의 공동체 의식을 강화할 수 있어야만 그 목적을 달성할 수 있을 것이다.
