In this study we discussed about interest in code‘ soul’and the virtues of its components based on the western classical literature. As a result, in the works of Homer describes‘ soul’as a symbol of vitality, while philosophy of Socrates and Plato represent‘ soul’as‘ Human Idea’and verified that it is systematically developed with regard to its‘ real image’and its three sub-components in the ideological category of dualism. Likewise, we proved by some example sentences that the thought of the ‘eternal recurrence’and the doctrine of the ‘immortability’of the soul which initiated to western society by Pythagoras and Plato was being inherited in French literature. But determining the true nature of ‘soul’, that is to discuss about transcendental world beyond death, is always in a center of controversy, due to the scientific limitation. But‘ soul’or‘ mind’is at least currently existing with our body. Therefore if we utilize soul’s ‘real image’wisely and live well with our ideas of soul, it will be meaningful itself. In this paper, the typology of human beings in accordance with the energy intensive body parts of soul’s three sub-components was an attempt in terms of useful extension of this research.

본 연구는 고대 그리스시대에서부터 오늘날에 이르기까지 서구 지성계에서 회자(膾炙)되고 있는‘영혼’의 코드에 대해 관심을 갖고 그 속성과 그것이 내포 하고 있는 하위성분들의 덕목들(virtues)에 관하여 서양의 고전문학과 접목시켜 서 살펴본 것이다. 그 결과, 호메로스의 작품에서는‘영혼’이란 단순히 생명력을 상징하는 것으로 묘사되었으나, 소크라테스와 플라톤의 철학에 와서는‘영혼’을 인간의 이데아로 보고, 이원론이라는 관념론적 범주에서‘영혼’에 대한 상(像)과 하위구성에 관해 매우 체계적으로 전개하고 있음을 확인하였다. 또한 피타고라 스와 플라톤 등에 의해 서구사회에 전수된 영혼회귀사상과 영혼불멸사상 등은 다수의 서양문학작품들 속에 여실히 계승되고 있었음을 확인하였다. 그렇지만 ‘영혼’의 실체를 밝히는 것, 죽음 너머의 초월의 세계를 논하는 것은 여전히 확 실하게 입증되지 못한 대상이기 때문에 항상 논란의 중심에 있다. 그러나 분명한 것은 우리의 영혼(soul) 내지는 정신(mind)은 우리의 육체와 함께 현존하고 있다 는 점이다. 그래서 현세에 살면서‘영혼’의 상(像)을 잘 살피어 인간에 대한 이해 가 더욱 풍성해질 수 있다면 그것만으로 의미가 있다고 생각한다. 본고에서‘영 혼’의 하위성분들의 에너지가 집중되는 인체 부위에 초점을 두어 사람의 유형을 구분한 것도 바로 이러한‘영혼’에 대한 연구의 유용성 있는 외연확장 차원에서 시도된 것이다.
