This study explores 303 cases of recent conversion to Christianity in Korea since 2005. Understanding conversion precedes how we practice the ministry of evangelism while promoting the identity of Christian faith. I undertook a survey of 18 questions concerning the recent converts' journey to Christianity. The criterion to determine the convert to Christianity was whether they were baptized within the last 10 years and are currently attending the church. Whereas surveys of conversion to Christianity have been conducted in the western churches such as Finding Faith Today and Thom Rainer's Scale, there has been no such attempts in Korea. I think understanding of the recent conversion will be a worthwhile study for the missional and evangelistic ministry, because it would provide us with the realities of journey to the Christian faith. The questions presented were crafted on the basis of Lewis Rambo's stage theory of religious conversion with some reference to Thom Rainer's questions for the formerly unchurched. The results are both similar and different to Finding Faith Today and Thom Rainer's Scale. For example, while people both in Korea and in the west are motivated to churches by relationship, Korean tend to be more dependent upon families(parents in particular). On the contrary the western people tend to consider friends and spouses more than the family of origin. In choosing the first church, both Koreans and westerns consider foremost the sermon of the pastors. But the second factor is the atmosphere of a church for Koreans and the friendliness of the church members for the westerners(Rainer' Scale). In conclusion, five characteristics for the effective ministry of evangelism can be summed up from this conversion study: 1) The centrality of the gospel proclamation, 2) The importance of daily routines and relationship, 3) The church's support for family evangelism, 4) The role of pastors in evangelism, and 5) The relative unimportance of facilities and programs. Building on this study, a more in-depth and multi-dimensional study of religious conversion and its relationship to public life would be further considered.

본 연구는 2005년 이후 기독교로 회심한 303명의 이들에 대한 설문 조사를 바탕으로 한국교회의 최근 회심자 현상과 전도의 교훈을 모색한다. 회심을 이해하는 것은 기독교 신앙의 정체성 이해를 증진시키는 동시에 우리가 어떻게 전도를 실천할 것인가에 선행한다. 본 연구는 2014년과 2016년 두 번에 걸쳐 실행된 회심자 설문 조사 결과를 토대로 최근 회심자들의 유형과 과정을 고찰한다. 최근 회심자의 기준은 지난 10년 이내에 세례를 받고 현재 교회에 출석하는 이들을 말한다. 이 두 가지 기준은 Gordon Smith가 말하는 온전한 회심을 이루는 외면적 요소 두 가지에 근거해서 정해졌다. 기독교로의 회심에 대한 연구가 서구에서는 Finding Faith Today나 Thom Rainer's Scale을 통해서 실행된 반면, 아직 한국에서는 이 영역에 대한 뚜렷한 조사가 없었다. 최근 회심자에 대한 조사는 한국교회의 선교와 전도 사역을 위해서 가치 있는 작업이 될 것이다. 본 연구는 그와 같은 조사를 수행하면서 전도 사역을 위한 교훈을 진단하고자 한다. 본 연구에 제시된 설문들은 Lewis Rambo의 회심의 단계 이론에 근거해서 만들어 졌으며, 여기에 Thom Rainer의 과거 불신자 분석을 위한 질문들도 참조하였다. 조사 결과에서는 Finding Faith Today와 Thom Rainer's Scale과 유사점 및 상이점이 나타났다. 예를 들어, 한국인이나 서구인 모두 관계에 의해서 교회에 나오게 되는 점은 유사하지만, 한국인은 가족과 특히 부모의 영향을 더 받는 경향이 있다. 대조적으로 서구인들의 경우는 원 가족 보다는 친구나 배우자의 영향이 더 두드러진다. 첫 번째 교회를 정하는데 있어서, 한국인과 서구인 모두 목회자의 설교를 가장 중시한다. 그러나 교회를 정하는데 두 번째 요인으로 한국인들은 교회의 분위기를 선택한 반면, 서구인들은 교인들의 친절함을 더욱 선호한다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 최근 회심 조사를 기초로 효과적인 교회의 전도 사역을 위한 다섯 가지 교훈을 제시한다. 첫째는 복음 선포의 중심성, 둘째는 일상과 관계의 중요성, 셋째는 가족 전도를 위한 교회의 지원 필요성, 넷째는 전도에 있어서 목회자의 역할, 다섯째는 시설과 프로그램의 약한 기여도 등이다. 이러한 회심에 대한 연구는 향후 더욱 보완되어 교회만을 위한 교훈을 찾는 것이 아닌, 기독교 신앙의 사회적이며 공적인 가치를 진단하고 증진하는데 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
