English pronunciation dictionaries can be implemented in the computational platform and provide foreign language learners with phonetic entries and interactive lessons. For these purposes, this paper reviews the evolution of the phonetic entries and interactive lessons. For these purposes, this paper reviews the evolution of the phonetic lexicographic techniques that underlie currently prevailing references, specifically designed for English-as-a-Foreign-Language (EFL) learners. Despite the progress that has been made, this paper picks out, among others, three major limitations with current EFL pronunciation references: inflexibility of phonetic access, insensitivity to learners` native language, and preponerence of sound refernece. The three limitations are examined by a survey centered on a group of Korean EFL learners`s opinions on their attitudes and expectations for pronunciation dictionaries. The statistical analysis demonstrates the similar result to that of Polish students in Sovkowiak (1999). It supports that the learners expect a pronunciation dictionary to be phonetically accessible, sensitive to their native language interference, and comprehensive sound reference. The paper further concludes with a review of some of the lexicographic phonetic works in progress for Korean EFL learners. New techniques developed are keyboard-compatible phonetic transcriptions to aid access flexibility, comparative phonetic annotations of Korean and English to suit the needs of native language sensitivity, and co-indexing of several component dictionaries to make a comprehensive sound refernece.
