A Study on F. Scott Fitzgerald's Short Stories
초록
영어
Renowned for his classic novel The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald is considered one of the most influential novelists and short story writers of the twentieth century. He was the spokesman for the Jazz Age, America`s decade of prosperity, excess, and abandon, which began soon after the end of World War Ⅰ. In his novels and stories Fitzgerald examined an entire generation`s search for the elusive American dream of wealth and happiness. We have in general found the dominant themes of his novels and major stories to include the falseness behind the glitter of the American Dream, the corrupting effect of wealth, and the transience and irrecapturability of youth and love. However, he wrote his many short stories which would help him formulate the themes and the narrative situations of his major novels. The stories, in fact, can usefully be considered in the context of the novels that often followed them. Some stories, though perhaps of small artistic worth, are therefore considered valuable because they demonstrate the continuity of motives, reveal the origins and the early elaborations of themes later developed in the novels, and offer a valuable counterpoint to the examination of the major works. This stories that are satellites to the The Great Gatsby are The Diamond as Big as the Ritz. Winter Dreams, The Sensible Thing, Absolution, The Rich Boy, and The Bridal Party. Those short stories are closely associated with the theme and the plot of The Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald in above short stories makes description of the inevitable disillusionment and irony derived from the pursuit of the romantic dream in our lives. In spite of the inevitable loss of dreams, Heroes of the short stories have the strong desire of success, the romantic way of life, the hightoned sensibility for the promise of life, and the hopeful vision of life. F. Scott Fitzgerald shows us in the above short stories how those themes and plots of those short stories are developed into his major novel, The great Gatsby. This thesis will be quite helpful to understand the major theme and plot of The Great Gatsby.
