The purpose of this study was to explore codes in Donghak-related Korean modern Poetry. Donghak has many faces such as thoughts, religion, and revolution, and researchers have done discussions on various views. The subjects of this study is Donghak-related works among Korean modern literary ones. The works on 'Ode to Hwangtohyun' are focused and other works are covered comprehensively on demand. Main subjects on the literary works, the intention of a writer that was revealed on works, and the result of internal imagery of the work are main subjects of discussion. Among Donghak-related works, there was a work focusing on the value of ‘life’.Innaecheon (the human is the heaven) is a movement of life recovery, and it is related to saving human movement. Donghak starts from an enlightenment about life, and self-awareness and practice about human life are center of it. It is characterized by an idea of life that reorganizes creatively the principles of life in Confucianism, Buddhism, the thoughts of Laotzu, and Christianity. Not only ‘life’ but also the will to ‘freedom’consists important network of meaning. Freedom makes the same context with equality etc, it is revealed with relation to hoping returning to human nature on Donghak-related works. And the practice about ‘human being’ was extracted as a core code. This is connected to Suwoon Choi Jae Woo’s enlightenment. Serving is a core of ‘Sicheonju (Serving god within me)’, awareness about human being is within it. The human rights and human dignity are universal principles that are found not only in the orient but also in western renaissance and civil revolution. These codes were reproduced in independence movement and democracy movement in modern Korean history. It was found that the spirit of Donghak penetrates modern history.

이 논문은 한국 현대시 작품과 관련된 동학의 코드를 밝히는 것이 목적이다. 동학은 사상, 종교, 혁명 등의 여러 측면이 있고, 연구자들도 그간 여러 관점에서 논의를 진행했다. 이번 연구의 대상은 한국 현대문학 작품 중에서 동학 관련 시다. 󰡔황토현에 부치는 노래󰡕에 실린 작품을 중심으로 하되 필요에 따라 다른 문헌의 것도 포괄적으로 다루도록 한다. 대상이 된 문학 작품에서 중심 소재로 다루어진 것과 작품에 드러난 작가의 의도, 그리고 작품 내적 형상화의 결과 등이 논의의 중심이다. 동학 관련 작품에서 ‘생명’에 대한 가치를 중심에 둔 작품이 있었다. 인내천(人乃天)은 생명 회복 운동에 다름 아니고, 그것은 활인(活人) 운동과 관련되었다. 동학이 생명에 대한 깨달음에서 출발하고, 인간의 생명에 대한 자각과 실천이 그 중심에 있다는 것이다. 이는 유교나 불교, 노장 사상, 기독교 등의 생명 원리를 창조적으로 재편한 생명 사상이라는 점이 특징이다. 생명과 함께 ‘자유’에 대한 의지도 중요한 의미망을 형성하고 있었다. 자유는 평등 등과 같은 맥락을 형성하는데, 동학 관련 작품에서 본성에 돌아가려는 것 등과 연관되어 나타났다. 또한 ‘인간’에 대한 실천이 핵심 코드로 추출되었다. 이는 수운 최제우 선생의 깨달음과도 연결되는 것이다. ‘시천주(侍天主)’는 섦김을 핵심으로 하는데, 여기에 인간에 대한 인식이 담겨 있다. 인간의 권리, 인간의 존엄 등은 동양은 물론이고 서구의 르네상스나 시민 혁명 등에서도 찾을 수 있는 보편적인 원리이다. 이들 코드들은 한국 근대사에서도 독립운동과 민주화운동 등에서 재현되었다. 동학 정신이 근대사를 관통하고 있음을 발견할 수 있었다.
