古代日本において天皇が生存している中で後任の天皇を直接選択し即位を確認できる譲位制度は、女性天皇を通じて段階的に受容されていき、王位継承における豪族の影響力を画期的に排除することができた。また、譲位制度は王位継承者の選択を天皇の権限として規定し天皇の崩御と次期天皇の即位による国家権力の空白状態を避けて円滑な王位継承を可能にする一方で、譲位権限と東宮指名権を緊密に連動させて皇族内の一部の系列が王位継承を独占する核心的な制度として活用された。 一方、『源氏物語』において朱雀天皇に大きな影響力を持っていた弘徽殿大后と右大臣が病に掛かり、自分も病になって各地で奇異な天変地異が続く中で、朱雀天皇は光源氏の復権と冷泉東宮への譲位を決断することで、一方では父親桐壺上皇の陰から逃れられない権力者として描かれながら、もう一方では母親弘徽殿大后の影響から離れた独立した上皇として新しく位置づけられている。 朱雀天皇は朧月夜との関係を持って自分の権威を侵害した光源氏を復権させ、王権を冷泉東宮に譲位することは、自らの権威と権力を破壊し放棄する自害的側面があることは否定できない。しかし、冷泉天皇への譲位と同時に行われた今上東宮の立坊に注目すれば、当時朱雀天皇が直面した超自然的危機情況を打開し転換する手段として、譲位は失墜した朱雀天皇の権威を上皇の権威として新しく位置づけて冷泉天皇に対する政治的影響力を維持しながら、今上東宮を通じて朱雀系列の王位継承を確固としたものにする有効な方法であったと思われる。
