Amulets are generally categorized into two types of amulets. Among them, the charm of the brickwork can be found in its original form, and the number is remarkably large and diverse. The meaning of the wall is one of the traditional folk beliefs that seek to escape evil by dealing with evil and overcoming evil. The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of amulet in the life and culture of the Korean people, and to examine the process of change in the era. Amulets can be divided into the forms of pictures and characters. There exist lots of categories of intermediate types between the picture amulets and character amulets. Picture amulets can be formed as concrete or abstract. The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of amulet in the life and culture of the Korean people through references. Besides, it has tried to find out the cultural and artistic identity of authentic amulets by studying relations between formative figures and chronological changes of amulets. This study shows various functions and formative changes of amulets which have continued for a long time by investigating shamanistic desires included in amulets by times. Throughout the study, it is found that amulets are not just a pattern of simple desire but cultural organism which assimilates cultures of the time and changes constantly. Besides, it includes the study about cultural and artistic values of authentic amulets, which was investigated by understanding definition and the formative features and recognizing visual factors of amulets.

부적은 의미적으로 복을 기원하는 길상부적과 사악한 기운을 막고자 하는 벽사부적으로 나뉜다. 이중 벽사부적의 수는 확연하게 많고 다양하다. 그것은 벽사부적이 좀 더 원론적 부적의 모습을 지니고 있기 때문이다. 형태적으로 그림형태의 부적과 문자형태의 부적으로 나눌 수 있다. 그 사이에는 여러 가지 중간 유형이 많이 존재하고, 그림형태의 부적에는 구상과 추상적인 형태가 있다. 본 연구는 문헌자료를 통하여 부적이 우리 민족의 삶과 문화 속에서 어떤 의미로 존재하였으며, 부적의 조형적 모습과 시대적 변화와의 관계를 살펴 정통부적의 문화․예술적 정체성을 찾아보는데 목적이 있다. 또한 부적에 담겨진 주술적 염원을 시대별로 고찰해 봄으로써 오랜 시간 이어져 내려오는 부적이 지닌 기능을 파악하고, 조형적 변화를 연구 하였다. 이를 통해 부적이 단순히 기복의 염원을 담은 문양만이 아니고, 그 시대의 문화를 흡수하여 변화하고 일정한 방향성을 지니며 살아가는 문화유기체임을 알게 되었다. 또한 부적의 개념과 조형적 특성을 이해하고 부적의 시각적 요소를 파악하여, 우리나라 정통부적의 문화․예술적 가치를 찾아보았다.
