Thomas Aquinas’ caritas synthesizes eros and agape. While eros signifies natural love, agape means supernatural love that is given only by grace. Caritas, which is given by grace like agape, supplements and perfects natural love that actualizes the good imperfectly. The human draws upon the natural law through participating in the eternal law by means of reason and will. Although the human can actualize the objective good through proper love in accordance with the natural law, it is caritas that lays a foundation for the goodness in such a way as to perfect it. Whereas religion has various essential significances, the transcendence of the world and the beatitude of the human are its necessary conditions. Caritas confirms the human natural faculty, thereby leading the human to supernatural beatitude. In this way, caritas sets up religion in its complete form.
