Taxi drivers' uniforms take an important role as a symbolic medium that can deliver the image of this group to the passengers effectively. However, the study on the uniforms for taxi drivers is very insufficient compared to that for other occupations. The purpose of this study is to propose the methods of increasing the usage of taxi drivers' uniforms in the future. The design and sample development for this study is a part of Seoul Metropolitan Facilities Management Corporation's uniform design development and prototype production for the call taxi for the disabled in Seoul. After looking through the roles and characteristics of the uniforms and the case studies of taxi drivers' uniforms in Korea and other countries, a survey and interviews were conducted on the Seoul Metropolitan Facilities Management Corporation and the taxi drivers to identify the issues and the ways of improvement. The result showed that the most dissatisfying factor for the taxi drivers was the fabric of the uniforms. As for the design of the uniforms, they preferred basic and versatile styles. As for color, they preferred toned down colors, which are not too far off from the current uniform color. This study was conducted to help Seoul Metropolitan City to make uniforms that can encourage the taxi drivers to work harder and give comfort, trust, and beauty to the disabled passengers. Hopefully, this study will be a good case study that can start a continuous study on taxi drivers' uniform design.

택시 유니폼은 승객에게 소속 집단의 이미지를 전달하며 인식시킬 수 있는 표현적 상징 매체로써 중요한 역할을 한다. 하지만 택시 유니폼에 관한 연구는 타 업종의 유니폼 연구에 비해 매우 부족한 것이 현실이다. 이에 본 연구를 통해 향후 택시 유니폼의 활성화 방안을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 연구에서 진행된 디자인 및 샘플 개발은 서울시설공단에서 시행되는 서울시 장애인 콜택시 유니폼 디자인 개발 및 시제품 제작 사업의 일환이다. 유니폼의 역할 및 특성, 국내·외 택시 유니폼 사례를 살펴본 다음, 서울시설공단과 운전원을 대상으로 설문조사와 직접 면담을 통해 문제점 및 개선사항을 파악하였다. 조사 결과 운전원들의 유니폼 불만족 요소로 소재가 가장 높았고, 디자인 선호도는 기본적이고 실용성이 강조된 스타일이 가장 높았다. 색상의 경우는 현 유니폼 색상에서 크게 벗어나지 않는 무채색 계열과 검정을 선호하였다. 본 연구는 운전원들의 근무의욕 향상과 동시에 승객인 장애인에게도 편안함, 신뢰감, 미적 감각 등을 줄 수 있는 유니폼을 제작하였다. 이를 통하여 장애인 택시 유니폼 디자인에 대한 지속적인 연구를 이어 나가는 데에 좋은 사례가 되기를 기대한다.
