This study aims to investigate various aspects of Korean modern society and culture appearing in Tour Joseon, the first published magazine in Korea during the Japanese occupation. The purpose of publication of Tour Joseon, the first tourism magazine in Korea was especially focused. Tour Joseon was launched in 1939 with expectations of Japanese attention to the Korean Peninsula. The medium used to attract Japanese was Modern Japan Joseon edition, the popular magazine issued in Japan at the same period. Tour Joseon imitated the composition and system of Modern Japan Joseon edition. In both magazines, same characters play a role to follow or create images of Joseon through “tours of Joseon”. However, while the Korean publication Tour Joseon was issued by Japanese who settled down in the peninsula, the Japanese publication Modern Japan Joseon edition was published by HaeSong MA, a Korean who fixed residence in Japan. In other words, the two magazines show similar formats and contents but have differences in a way to introduce Joseon by reflecting self consciousness as a “foreigner” living in the foreign land. This study paved the way to explore the true nature of personal desire revealed under the imperialism through examining relevance of these magazines whose theme is “Joseon” and “Tour”, published in Korea and Japan in modern times, and analysing their contents.

이 연구는 일제강점기 한국에서 최초로 발행되었던 『관광조선』이라는 잡지에서 보이는 한국근대 사회와 문화의 다양한 양상을 규명하는데 그 목적이 있다. 특히 한국에서 최초로 발행된 관광잡지 『관광조선』의 출간 의도에 초점을맞추고 있다. 『관광조선』은 한반도에 대한 열도 일본인들의 주목을 기대하며1939년 창간되었다. 일본인들의 주목을 끌기 위해 사용한 매개는 같은 시기 일본에서 발행되었던 대중잡지 『모던일본 조선판』이었다. 『관광조선』은 『모던일본 조선판』의 구성과 체재를 모방했다. 양 잡지에는 동일한 인물들이 ‘조선 여행’을 통해 조선에 대한 이미지를 답습 및 창출하는 역할을 한다. 한편 조선 발행의 『관광조선』은 반도에 정주한 일본인이, 일본 발행 『모던일본 조선판』은마해송이라는 일본 정주 조선인이 발행한다는 특징이 있다. 따라서 양 잡지는비슷한 형식과 내용을 담으면서도 각각 타국에 사는 ‘외국인’으로서 자기의식을담으며 조선을 소개했다는 차이점을 발견할 수 있다. 이와 같은 근대시기 한국과 일본에서 발간된 ‘조선’과 ‘여행’을 주제로 한 잡지의 관련성 탐구와 그 내용 분석을 통해 제국주의 체제 하에서 드러나는 개인적 욕망의 실체를 탐구하는 계기를 마련했다.
