Shindangongan is the translation of a Chinese Gongan novel written in the Chinese Hyeonto style published serially in Hwangseongshinmun in 1906. The work shows a complex tendency in terms of form and content as it basically has the tradition of Sino-Korean novels combined with the content of Chinese popular novels and the characteristics of serial stories. Especially in terms of content, the parts where the narrator intervenes in the story and makes ethical comments about the main content of murder and adultery represent the clash between the popular desire and moral concept of intellectual readers with Chinese knowledge. This study examined the situations in which crimes were made public issues according to the development of newspapers those days as the literary and social background behind the crime narratives of adultery and murder being depicted in such stimulating ways in Shindangongan in 1906. The study also analyzed the work in the aspect of commercial novels to postpone the narrative by expanding the provocative descriptions of the original work and in the aspect of popular novelists to appease the public’s anxiety about crimes by criticizing the popular content ethically.

『신단공안(神斷公案)』은 1906년에 『황성신문(皇城新聞)』에 연재된 한문현토체소설로서 중국 공안소설의 번안이다. 기본적으로 한문소설적 전통에, 중국 통속소설의 내용과 신문소설적 특징이 결합되어 형태적으로나 내용면에서 복합적인 경향을 보인다. 특히 내용면에서 살해와 불륜을 주 내용으로 하면서도 서술자가 개입하여 윤리적 논평을 가하는 부분은 이 시기 신문소설을 읽는 한문 지식인 독자들의 통속적 욕망과 도덕적 관념이 충돌하고 있는 지점이다. 본고에서는 1906년 『신단공안』에 불륜과 살해의 범죄 서사가 이처럼 자극적으로 등장하게 된 문학적, 사회적 배경으로 신문이 발달함에 따라 범죄가 공론화되었던 당대 상황을 살펴보았다. 또한 작품 분석을 통해 원작에 자극적 묘사를 확대함으로써 서사를 지연시키는 상업소설적 면모와 통속적 내용에 윤리적 비판을 함으로써 대중적 불안을 무마하고자 하는 통속작가로서의 면모를 분석하였다.

『神断公案』は1906年に『皇城新聞』に連載された漢文懸吐体小説で、中国公案小説の翻案である。基本的に漢文小説的な伝統に中国の通俗小説の内容と新聞小説的な特徴が融合し、形態的にも内容面においても複合的な傾向が見られる。特に、内容面で殺害と不倫を主なテーマにしながらも、著者が介入して倫理的論評を加えるあたりは、この時期の新聞小説を読む漢文知識人読者の通俗的欲望と道徳的観念が衝突している部分である。 本稿では、1906年の󰡔神断公案󰡕に不倫と殺害の犯罪小説がこのように刺激的に登場するようになった文学的、社会的背景により、新聞の発達につれて犯罪が一般的に議論されるようになった当時の状況を調べてみた。また、作品分析を通じて、原作に刺激的描写を拡大することで敍事を引き延ばす商業小説的な側面と、通俗的内容に倫理的批判をすることで大衆的不安をなだめようとする通俗作家としての側面を分析した。
