There are so many arguments around the concept of Augustinian free will. For example, the argument whether on Augustine’s concept of free will is an invention or a discovery is also famous theme. Now, this paper propose a interpretative perspective of Augustine’s concept of free will differentiated from traditional approach based on Aristotle’s way. The view point of this paper is based on Augustinian questions on evil and free will in his work, De libero arbitrio. In general, there is a tendency to regard Augustinian concept of free will as a medieval version of moral responsibility. But this paper argues that Augustinian approach to free will has unique horizon including ethical eudaemonism. The most important points in Augustinian approach to free will are the philosophical and theological arguments on problem of the cause of the evil and the recovery of original freedom. In De libero arbitrio, Augustine endeavors to affirm free will and avoid all factors of determinism in dialogues with the Manichees. According to Augustine, God is not author of sin. Augustine asserts that sin is the result of man’s own choice. And this choice is a swerving toward lower things, an emptiness or nothingness. The source of sin is person’s voluntary choice: the free choice of will. In this context, he claims that we have free will. Freedom of will, he asserts, pertains to the freedom in which humans were created. And he considers the question of what the will to turn in the direction from the unchanging good of God to inferior goods. When good is taken away, when life turns towards temporal objects, nothing is left. In short, sin and evil are nothingness. Even though the text which mainly studied in this paper, De libero arbitrio is belong to early works of Augustine, it has many insights which will be developed deeply through the stages of Augustinian philosophical and theological thoughts. Therefore, this paper’s focuses based on De libero arbitrio are summarized as follows; Augustine’s concept of free will has two horizons of the moral responsibility and the overcoming of sin by divine grace.

아우구스티누스의 자유의지에 관한 논변에는 그것이 발명인가 혹은 발견인가에 관한 질문을 포함하여 다양한 의견들이 수반된다. 필자는 이 글에서 자유의지와 도덕적 책임에 관한 아리스토텔레스적 설명법 이외의 길, 즉 아우구스티누스의 고유한 문제의식을 따라 의지의 자유를 해석해야 한다는 점을 제안하였다. 이를 위해 그의 초기 저작, '자유의지론'을 중심으로 아우구스티누스의 자유 개념이 지니고 있는 문제의식과 그의 사상적 발전 과정에서 전개될 단초들에 관심을 가짐으로써 통전적 이해의 필요성을 확인하고자 하였다. 일반적으로, 아우구스티누스의 자유 개념은 고대의 문제의식을 새로운 용어로 재정리한 것에 불과한 것으로 간주되는 경향이 있으나, 이 글에서는 그의 관점이 악의 원인과 극복에 관한 성찰을 아우르고 있다는 점에서 아리스토텔레스적 관심을 넘어선다는 점을 제시하였다. 필자는 이것을 자유의 지평 확장이라고 보았으며, 아우구스티누스의 자유 개념이 의지에 관한 윤리적 접근을 넘어 악의 문제에 관한 실존적 성찰의 행로와 맞물려 있다고 보았다. 특히 그의 '자유의지론'에 등장한 질문들, 즉 악의 장본인에 관한 질문과 신의 예지 및 은총과의 변증법적 연관성에 관한 논의들은 도덕적 책임 귀속의 단계를 넘어서는 것이기 때문이다. '자유의지론'에서 아우구스티누스는 인간의 자유의지를 확증하며 죄를 인간의 자유의지에 의한 선택에 따른 것으로 설명한다. 이는 마니교적 결정론을 극복하고 인간과 죄, 그리고 신과 은총의 문제를 엮어 내는 변증법적 이해의 기초가 된다. 이러한 문제의식을 확장하여, 필자는 아우구스티누스의 자유 개념을 바르게 이해하기 위한 조건으로 악의 원인에 관한 윤리학적 규명이라는 지평과 악의 극복을 위한 행복론적 모색이라는 두 지평이 균형 있게 고려되어야 함을 제안하였다. 즉 통전적 접근의 필요성을 제안한 것이다. 다시 말해, 아우구스티누스의 자유 개념이 윤리학의 특정한 논제, 즉 책임의 귀속에 국한되는 것이 아니라 인간과 신에 관한 이해를 포함하는 지평의 확장으로 이해되어야 한다는 것이다. 물론, 이 글이 다루고 있는 '자유의지론'이 아우구스티누스의 초기 저작이라는 점에서 그의 철학 전체를 대변하기에는 역부족이라는 점은 인정하지만, 거기에서 자유에 관한 성찰들이 발아되고 있다는 점 또한 무시해서는 안 될 것이다. 자유에 관한 성찰은 아우구스티누스 철학의 전개 과정 중 어느 한 시기의 국한된 것이 아니라 그의 철학 전반에 흐르고 있다는 점에서 더욱 그렇다.
