This article is about the research for the historical aspect of the preceptor Jawoon who is called today's the great preceptor in Korea. Among his conducts, I examined his effort on the harmonization of Sangha and the buddhist work of translating sutras related to Vinaya Pitaka(律藏). Although he gave a big influence to the Jogye order, there have been few academic studies done so far. So, I thought it would be a good chance to research for some of his conducts and his belief from an objective point of view. In this article, first, I dealt with the change of the Jogye order and the Namsan Precept Order(南山律宗). : the tradition of precepts, the historical change of the Jogye order, the precept order and the precept altar(戒壇) of modern Korean Buddhism, and the interrelationship between precept lineages of the preceptors, Ilbong and Jawoon. Second, the preceptor Jawoon's effort on promoting practice of precepts and the buddhist work of translating sutras as his wishes to develop buddhist precepts and to spread Vinaya Pitaka, and its publication. Third, I briefly summarized the preceptor Jawoon's reformation process of precept altar and of receiving precepts, implementation of the precept for Sikchamanani(式叉摩那尼戒), restoration of Dual Sangha system, harmonization of Sangha, and development of precepts. I look forward to having this article helpful to the studies concerned with the preceptor Jawoon, the precept altar system of the Jogye order, and publications related to Vinaya Pitaka.

본 고찰은 한국 현대기 대율사로 지칭되고 있는 자운율사의 역사의 단면을 정리한 논고이다. 자운율사의 행적 중에서 승가의 화합을 위한 행보와 율장(律藏)과 관련된 역경불사의 내용을 정리하였다. 자운 율사는 한국불교, 조계종단에 끼친 영향이 많았음에도 불구하고 지금껏 학술적인 정리가 미흡하였다. 이런 점을 안타깝게 여긴 필자는 이번 기회에 자운율사의 행적과 지성의 일부분이라도 객관적으로 정리하고자 하였다. 이 글에서는 첫 번째로 종단의 변천과 남산율종(南山律宗)을 정리하였다. 구체적인 내용으로는 계율의 전래와 종단의 변천, 근대 한국불교의 율종과 계단(戒壇), 범어사 일봉율사의 율맥과 자운율사의 상관성을 살펴보았다. 두 번째로는 자운율사의 율풍진작과 역경불사를 정리하였다. 구체적 내용으로 계율중흥의 서원, 율장 보급의 발원, 율장의 간행을 살펴보았다. 세 번째로는 자운율사의 계단의 정비와 화합승가를 정리하였다. 구체적인 내용으로 단일계단법의 제정, 수계의식 정비, 식차마나니계(式叉摩那尼戒) 시행, 이부승제(二部僧制) 복원, 화합승가와 계율의 중흥의 내용을 살펴보았다. 필자의 이 글이 자운율사, 조계종단의 계단제도, 율장과 관련된 출간 등의 분야의 연구에 참고가 되길 기대한다.
