This article is about the history of Hwagwawon(華果院) which Baek Yongseong(白龍城) built in Hamyang district, for the purpose of realization of Seon and Farming Buddhism. So far, there have been few researches about Hwagwawon although it was a very significant subject for the study of Baek Yongseong. Therefore, I collected and analyzed all the resources related to Hwagwawon. In this paper, first I analyzed its compendium and features. Hwagwawon established around 1927 year was the realized place of Buddhist innovation by Baek Yongseong, not just simply orchard. Baek Yongseong cultivated the land and grew fruits and vegetables to become self-sufficient. And also he taught Seon disciples as building a Seon center. Translating sutras and writing works were made there, too. Like this, Hwagwawon was a meaningful house in the life of Baek Yongseong, or in the aspects of Innovation Buddhism and the ideological development. At the same time, it was also an important site to disciples following and succeeding his ideology. In the Seon center of Hwagwawon, about 10 practitioners meditated and worked every year. Among them, there were his dharma disciples, Lee Seonpa - who was in charge of the main master of the center after Beak Yongseong's death - and Byeon Bong'am - who was the main director. In this research, I mainly analyzed the correlations with Baek Yongseong as explaining Byeon Bong'am's conducts. Meanwhile, the Seon center of Hwagwawon after Baek Yongseong's death seems to keep a cooperative relationship with Seon and Doctrine Research Center. In this, more details are needed to be explored about the financial support for the provisional government. I look forward to having this research as a helpful base source for Baek Yongseong, Seon and Farming Buddhism, Hwagwawon, Recognition of Baek Yongseong's dharma disciples, and the correlation between Seonhakwon and Daegakgyo.

본 고찰은 白龍城이 禪農佛敎의 구현 차원에서 경남 함양에 세운 華果院에 대한 전모를 살핀 글이다. 지금껏 화과원은 백용성 연구 차원에서 중요한 주제임에도 불구하고 연구가 미약하였다. 그래서 필자는 화과원에 관련된 자료를 수집, 분석하여 화과원에 대한 모든 것을 정리하였다. 필자는 본 고찰에서는 우선 화과원의 개요, 성격을 분석하였다. 1927년 무렵에 세워진 화과원은 단순한 과수원이 아닌, 백용성 불교혁신의 구현처이었다. 백용성은 그곳에서 개간을 하고, 과수와 야채 등을 가꾸는 자급자족을 실천하였다. 그러면서 그곳에 선원을 지어 수좌들을 지도하였다. 또한 그곳에서 역경 및 저술 작업을 하였다. 이처럼 화과원은 백용성의 삶, 혁신불교, 사상적 측면에서 의의가 있는 곳이었다. 그러나 동시에 백용성의 사상을 따르고 계승한 제자들의 측면에서도 중요한 대상이었다. 즉 화과원의 선원에서는 매년 10여명 내외의 수행자들이 참선과 노동을 하였다. 이들 중에는 백용성의 전법제자가 있었으니 그 대상자는 백용성의 입적 후 조실을 역임한 이선파와 입승 및 원주를 역임한 변봉암이었다. 이 글에서는 주로 변봉암의 행적을 정리하면서 백용성과의 연관성을 정리하였다. 한편 백용성의 입적 후의 화과원 선원은 선리참구원과 협조 관계를 유지하였다고 보인다. 이는 화과원에서 임시정부 자금전달과 함께 추후 자세한 해명이 요청된다. 이 연구가 백용성, 禪農佛敎, 화과원, 백용성의 수법제자의 재인식, 선학원과 대각교와 연관성 등에 유익한 기초가 되길 기대한다.
