The goal of this study is to investigate how well Christian parents teach and pass on the Christian faith to their children. With Sunday school movements spreading, church and Christian educators have been considered fully responsible for children’s faith formation. However, recently, family and parents have been back in the spotlight once again as actors for education in faith and teachers of faith as well. Participants of this study were 420 parents from churches belonging to evangelical denominations in Korea. For data collection, this study used the Family Faith Education Questionnaire in order to assess the teaching practices of Christian parents. The results found that there is a gap between parental awareness and practice. In fact, most parents consider family as a significant educational spot. It was also given that parents are the most significant influence for children’s faith development. However, it was also found that parents are not doing well in teaching faith to their children. Additionally, other results found that mothers, younger parents, and highly educated parents are more likely to have an interest in children’s faith formation than fathers, the older generation, and lower educated parents.

본 연구의 목적은 그리스도인 부모가 자녀의 신앙교육을 얼마나 잘 수행하고 있는지를 분석하는 것이다. 주일학교운동이 확산되면서, 교회와 사역자 또는 교사는 자녀들의 신앙형성에 전적인 책임을 가지고 있는 것으로 여겨져 왔다. 하지만 최근 들어, 가정과 부모가 각각 신앙교육의 현장으로 그리고 신앙의 교사로 큰 주목을 받고 있다. 이런 시점에서, 부모들의 신앙교육의 실제를 점검해 보는 일은 의미 있는 일이 될 것이다. 본 연구에 사용된 표본은 복음주의 교단에 속한 교회에 출석하는 420명의 부모들이다. 부모들의 가정신앙교육을 측정하기 위하여 5개의 하위변인, 즉 ‘교회교육관심도’, ‘가정신앙교육실행’, ‘교회교육만족도’, ‘신앙교육가치’, ‘교회교육연계’, ‘성경적양육’이 포함된 연구자에 의해 제작된 설문지가 사용되었다. 본 연구의 결과는 신앙교육에 대한 부모의 인식과 실천에 괴리가 있음을 보여준다. 거의 대부분의 부모들은 가정을 기독교교육을 신앙교육의 중요한 현장으로 인식하고 있었다. 게다가, 누가 자녀의 신앙성장에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는지를 묻는 질문에 부모라고 응답이 가장 높았다. 그러나 부모가 가정에서 자신에게 맡겨진 신앙교사로서의 역할과 책임을 잘 수행하지 못하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 그 외에도, 어머니가, 보다 젊은 부모가, 그리고 학력수준이 보다 높은 부모가 각각 자녀신앙교육에 더 많은 관심과 실행의지를 가지고 있는 것으로 나타났다.
