This study aims to explore the trends of Christian peace education and describe its future prospects. Although Christianity has long established the roots of the Bible and church traditions, it has not been long since it was practiced and explored systematically within academic discussions. Throughout the 20th century after World War II, when general peace education began as a central role of the UN and was gradually developing worldwide, there was a lack of concern about Christian peace education in most churches except historical peace churches. However, as the problems of conflict and violence became increasingly complicated in the world, the World Council of Churches in the 1980s declared the responsibility of churches for Justice, Peace and Life. They also emphasized the need for peace movements and the importance of peace education in churches. As a result, the need and challenge for Christian peace education has continued to increase. In this process, theoretical studies of Christian peace education have been discussed mainly from liberal, multi-cultural, economical and feminist approaches. These discussions represent various areas where Christian peace education is comprehensive. On the other hand, historical peace churches and the WCC were pivotal in promoting the movement of Christian peace education. However, these movements are limited in scope as they are carried out by the minority, rather than a majority. Most of the churches still do not concern themselves with the concrete practice and systematic curricular development of peace education. Therefore, future Christian peace education faces the task of developing research about the diverse methods of peace and the concrete and practical curriculums that can be applied within the church context.

본 연구는 현대 기독교 평화교육의 동향을 고찰해봄으로서 앞으로 나아가야 할 방향성을 제안하는데 목적을 둔다. 기독교 평화교육은 성서와 교회 전통에 오랜 뿌리를 가지고 있지만, 본격적으로 학문적인 논의와 더불어 체계적인 교육으로 발전된 역사는 오래 되지 않았다. 20세기 초 세계대전을 경험하면서 UN을 중심으로 일반 평화교육 운동이 확산되어갔던 반면에, 기독교 내부적으로는 역사적 평화교회를 제외하고 대부분의 교회 내에서 평화교육에 대한 관심은 미흡한 상태로 머물러 있었다. 그러나 갈등과 폭력의 문제가 전 세계적으로 더욱 심화되어 감에 따라 1980년대에 세계교회협의회(WCC)가 “정의, 평화, 생명”이라는 슬로건을 내걸고 본격적으로 평화운동을 공식화하였고, 교회 내 평화교육의 중요성을 강조하였다. 이 후 기독교 평화교육의 필요성에 대한 요청과 도전이 계속적으로 확대되었다. 이러한 과정에서 기독교 평화교육에 대한 이론적 연구들은 주로 해방적, 다문화적, 생태학적, 여성학적 접근에서 논의되어 왔다. 이와 같은 논의들은 기독교 평화교육이 포괄하는 다양한 영역들을 나타내준다. 다른 한편으로 실천현장에서는 역사적 평화교회와 WCC가 중심이 되어 기독교 평화교육의 실천적인 움직임을 주도해왔다. 그러나 이러한 움직임들은 아직까지도 다수보다는 소수가 중심이 되고 있고, 장기적이고 정기적인 과정으로서 보다는 단기적이고 산발적인 캠페인의 형태를 가진다는 점에서 제한적이다. 대부분의 교회현장에서는 여전히 평화교육에 대한 구체적인 실천과 체계적인 교육과정 개발에 관하여 관심이 부족한 상황인 것이다. 그러므로 앞으로의 기독교 평화교육은 다양한 평화영역에 대한 연구와 함께 교회현장에서 접목할 수 있는 구체적인 평화교육 커리큘럼을 개발해 나가야 할 과제를 가진다.
