This study examined the psychological effects of layoff and resultant unemployment, laid‐off workers’ stress coping methods, and the roles of labor unions as social supporters. Layoff and resultant unemployment induce psychological symptoms such as depression and anxiety disorder, and psychosomatic symptoms such as insomnia and headache. Labor unions are carrying out social supports by assisting laid‐off workers to lead a relatively healthy life in an extremely stressful situation during the period of layoff. Especially democratic labor unions are assisting laid‐off workers’ problem‐focused coping in the stressful situation of layoff by providing social supports such as material support, informative support, emotional support, and evaluative support based on close network and communication structure. This suggests that, through giving social supports, labor unions are exerting a psychologically positive influence on laid‐off workers.

본고에서는 해고와 이로 인한 실업이 미치는 심리적인 영향과 해고노동자 들의 스트레스 대처 방식 및 사회적 지원으로서 노동조합의 역할에 대하여 고찰해 보았다. 해고와 이로 인한 실업은 우울 및 불안장애와 같은 심리적인 증상과 불면증, 두통과 같은 심리⋅신체적인 증상을 유발한다. 해고라는 극 심한 스트레스 상황에서 해고노동자들이 해고기간을 비교적 건강하게 지낼 수 있도록 조력하는 역할을 노동조합이 사회적 지원으로서 수행하고 있다. 특히 민주노총은 긴밀한 네트워크와 의사소통 구조를 바탕으로 사회적 지원 인 물질적 지원, 정보적 지원, 정서적 지원, 평가적 지원을 하며 해고라는 스 트레스 상황에서 문제중심적 대처를 할 수 있도록 조력하는 역할을 하고 있 다. 노동조합이 사회적 지원으로서 해고노동자에게 심리적으로 긍정적인 영 향을 미치고 있음을 시사하였다.
