The purpose of this study was to analyze the vocal characteristics and images in the speeches of successive South Korean Presidents. The vocal characteristics may vary according to several factors, including pitch, loudness, tones, and accuracy of pronunciation, which determine message communicability and affect the general image that involves the speaker's public trust and likability. In particular, a study on the vocal images of successive Presidents is meaningful because politicians create their image through s speech given to the people. Vocal characteristics were showed by analyzing their vocal images. Scientific analyses of the voices in the speeches of eight Presidents (from former President Park Jeong-hee to the incumbent President Park Geun-hye) were made and experts' opinions were asked. Eignt presidents' voices were analyzed on the basis of such vocal characteristics as pitch, accuracy of pronunciation, resonance, and intonation changes. Guidelines for improving communicability and images were given.

본 연구는 한국 역대 대통령들의 연설에 나타난 목소리 특징과 이미지 분석을 목적으로 하였다. 목소리는 음높이, 크기, 음색, 발음의 정확성 등 여러 요인에 따라 특징이 다르게 나타나며, 이러한 요인들이 메시지의 전달력에 영향을 미쳐서 화자의 공신력, 호감도 등 전반적인 이미지를 변화시킨다. 정치인은 대국민적 연설 등을 통해 자신의 이미지를 형성하기 때문에 2017년 대통령 선거를 앞두고 역대 대통령의 목소리 특징과 이미지를 분석하는 연구는 중요성을 갖는다. 본 연구에서는 박정희 전 대통령에서 박근혜 대통령까지 8명의 전‧현직 대통령의 연설에서 대통령의 목소리를 과학적으로 분석하고, 전문가들의 의견을 종합하여 연구결과를 제시하였다. 역대 대통령들의 목소리에서 나타난 목소리의 음높이, 발음의 정확성, 공명, 억양변화 등의 특징을 살펴보고, 메시지 전달력 제고와 이미지 개선을 위한 시사점을 살펴보았다.
