The northern region of Chungnam province is the fastest growing area inKorea. The economic growth rate of this region has been approximately 2.9 times theaverage growth rate of Korean national economy for recent 11 years. This researchanalyzes the economic growth and its determinants in the northern region of Chungnamprovince. The dramatic economic growth of this region is driven by an abundant amountof production factors and a good regional investment environment. In order to find thedeterminants of regional growth, this study categorizes the types of regional growth andits determinants by reviewing the literature in a variety of regional growth models. Theempirical analysis of this article shows that a basic production factor and the primaryfactors of the regional investment environment are the main factors for economic growthin the northern region of Chungnam province. A large number of labor significantlycontributes to the fast growth of northern region of Chungnam province. The significantprimary factors of the regional investment environment are export, specialized industries,GRDP of the Capital region.

충남 북부지역은 우리나라에서 가장 빠르게 성장하는 지역으로 최근 10년 동안 전국 경제성장률보다 2.9배 높으며 고용증가율은 3.7배 높을 정도로 경제활동이 가장 활발한 지역이다. 충남 북부지역의 이처럼 빠른 경제성장은 풍부한 노동력, 첨단산업의 집적경제 효과, 수출 증가효과, 수도권과의 인접성 등 풍부한 생산요소 및 양호한 지역투자환경 등에 기초하는 것으로 알려지고 있다. 본 논문은 이처럼 빠르게 성장하는 충남 북부지역의 경제성장 및 성장요인을 분석하기 위해 기존 지역경제성장이론 검토를 통해 지역경제성 유형을 구분하고 각 유형별 핵심 성장요인을 구분하였다. 충남 북부지역은 수익증대효과에 의해 발전하는 지역으로 판단하여 본 유형의 핵심 성장요인으로 생산요소와 1차 지역투자환경 요인들에 초점을 맞추어 충남 북부지역의 경제성장 결정요인을 분석하였다. 충남 북부지역의 경제성장 결정요인에 대한 실증분석 결과는 충남 북부지역에 집적된 특화산업이 이 지역의 경제성장을 견인하는 것으로 보여주었다. 생산요소 중에서는 풍부한 노동력이 충남의 경제성장에 유의하게 기여하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 충남 북부지역의 1차 지역투자환경 졀정요인들 중에서는 수출과 수도권의 인접성이 유의하게 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.
