The purpose of this study was to examine the transition process of poomsae competition from the opening of Taekwondo Hanmadang (grand festival) in 1992 up to now and to seek future direction of development. The research results were drawn through content analysis based on the collected data, and interviews on persons related to the competition were conducted in order to include the opinions at the actual site. As the research results, the poomsae competition could be divided into three periods: The beginning period (1992-1997) that initiated with the Taekwondo Hanmadang, the growing period (1998-2005) that many poomsae competitions were developed, and the present (2006-) that the rules of poomsae competition have been established and the world competitions have been held. In the transition period, the poomsae competitions have been developed in diverse aspects including fostering poomsae players at the first-line taekwondo studios, expansion of taekwondo learners, vitalization of the contest field, establishment of competition rules, and unification of the poomsae motion. On the other hand, there has been problems similar as the competing match at the turning point of becoming a game. Recently, there is the wind of change as the World Taekwondo Federation said it will make the poomsae competition like the figure skating game. In this situation, we should make a momentum to qualitatively develop the poomsae competition more based on its bright and dark sides by accepting past problems and suggesting solutions.

본 연구는 92 태권도한마당 개최 이후 현재에 이르기까지 품새 대회의 변천과정을 살펴보고 향후 발전 방향을 모색하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 수집된 자료를 바탕으로 내용분석기법을 통해 연구결과를 도출하였고 실제 현장에서 느 꼈던 견해를 담기위해 해당 대회의 관계자를 대상으로 면담을 실시하여 보완하였다. 연구결과 품새 대회는 태권도한마 당을 시초로 하는 태동기(1992~1997), 대학 총장기 대회를 시작으로 많은 품새 대회가 발전하기 시작한 성장기 (1998~2005), 품새 경기규정 제정과 함께 세계대회를 개최한 현재(2006~)로 구분할 수 있었다. 변천과정 속에서 품 새 경기는 일선 도장의 품새 선수육성 및 저변확대, 경연분야의 활성화, 경기규정 제정, 품새 동작의 통일 등 다양한 측면 에서 발전을 이루었으나, 한편으로 경기화의 기로에서 겨루기 종목과 유사한 문제점을 나타내기도 하였다. 최근에는 품 새 대회를 피겨스케이팅과 같은 종목으로 발전시키겠다고 천명한 세계태권도연맹을 비롯하여 품새 분야에 변화의 바람 이 불고 있다. 이러한 상황에서 그동안 품새 대회의 변천 과정에서 나타난 명과 암을 바탕으로 과거의 문제들을 탐색하 고 발전 방향을 제시함으로써 보다 질적으로 발전 할 수 있는 계기를 마련해야 할 것이다.
