The study seeks to determine an applicable method in Korean education by reviewing from the perspective of Politeness theory, how discourse topics in the natural conversations of both Koreans and Japanese are chosen and developed when they first meet. Topics such as university life and university major were mostly chosen in both cases, and these choices can be interpreted as indicative of a positive politeness strategy, that is “intensify interest to H” and “seek agreement”. However, when topics were related to privacy, Koreans tended to use a positive politeness strategy, that is “assert common ground”, while Japanese tended to use a negative politeness strategy, that is “minimize the imposition”. Additionally, it was shown that non marked utterances and dicourse marker in topic initiation were used more in Japanese conversation than Korean conversation. This could also be interpreted as a negative politeness strategy. When it comes to topic development, however, both Koreans and Japanese were shown to have a high rate of interactive type.This study demonstrates the importance of providing various natural spoken language materials and also provides evidence that contributes to Korean education through investigating selection, introduction, and development of discourse topics in the natural conversations of both Korean and Japanese.

본 연구의 목적은 한국어와 일본어의 첫 만남의 실제 대화를 대상으로담화화제의 선택 및 도입과 전개방식에 대하여 공통점과 차이점을 분석하여 그 결과를 공손이론의 관점에서 고찰하는 것이다. 담화화제 선택에 있어서는 한국어와 일본어 모두 학교와 학업에 대한화제 선택이 현저하게 많이 보였는데 이것은 적극적 공손전략 중 청자에게 관심을 강화하는 전략과 서로 일치점을 찾는 전략의 사용으로 볼수 있다. 그러나 프라이버시에 관한 화제의 선택에 대해서는 한국어대화에서는 적극적 공손전략의 사용이, 일본어대화에서는 소극적 공손전략이 사용되고 있었다. 담화화제의 도입에 대해서도 일본어대화에서 화제도입문의 화계(중도종료형발화)와 담화표지의 사용이 한국어대화보다 비교적 높은 비율을 보였는데 이는 소극적 공손전략으로 볼 수 있다. 담화화제의 전개방식은 한국어(58%)와 일본어(84%) 모두 적극적 공손전략에 해당하는 상호형이 높은 비율을 차지하고 있지만 한국어대화에서는 확인질문연쇄형과 일방형의 비율도 일본어대화보다 높게 나타났다. 본 연구는 한국어와 일본어의 담화화제 선택과 도입 및 전개방식에대한 경향을 실제 대화에서 조사하여 폭넓은 구어 자료를 제공함과 동시에 한국어 교육에 기여할 수 있는 기반을 마련했다는 것에 그 의의를 두고자 한다.
