Maeng Bo-soon(1862-1933) was a representative Neo-Confucianist of modern Korea as well as Yongin region, Kyeong-ggy province. Dongjeonmoonjip is an anthology of him compiled by his maternal great-grandson, Jeong Ho-shin. But there are some shortages to understand Maeng's whole life totally. Especially there were no documents even though Jeong said that this anthology was for celebrating Maeng's exploit of independence movement. Therefore this paper aimed to help totally memory Maeng's whole life through restoration of the contents of independence movement of him. There is no records on the independence movement of him in Western Manchuria, China but there are much blames of Neo-Confucianists at that time to Maeng in Dongjeonmoonjip. I guess that these blames came out from stubborn of a part of Neo-Confucianists who regarded the Neo-Confucian exclusiveness as important. But there is one question why should Maeng's patriotic behavior be blamed by conservative Neo-Confucianists at that time. If we admit that independence movement is a common sense in colonial period by Japan, we can think that Maeng is typical character who realized his loyaly. This paper was written to confirm this fact.

孟輔淳(1862-1933)은 근대시기 경기도 용인지방뿐만 아니라 당대를 대표하는 유림 인사였다. 『東田文集』은 그를 추모하기 위하여 외증손인 鄭虎信이 주동이 되어 근래에 편찬한 것이다. 맹보순이 근대 유림계에서 갖고 있던 역사적 위상에 비추어, 늦은 감이 있지만 이제라도 그의 문집이 편찬되었다는 것은 賞讚되어 마땅하다. 그러나 『동전문집』은 맹보순의 생애를 완벽하게 복원해내는 데에는 많은 아쉬움이 엿보인다. 특히 문집 간행을 주도한 정호신은 문집 편찬의 의의를 만주에서 독립운동을 하던 증조부를 기리기 위한 것이라고 말하였으나, 실제 내용에서는 그러한 부분을 전혀 찾아볼 수 없다. 따라서 본고에서 미진한 맹보순의 독립운동 내용을 복원하여 맹보순을 온전히 이해할 수 있는 기억의 재구성에 도움을 주고자 하였다. 『동전문집』을 살펴보면, 맹보순이 전개한 구체적인 서간도 독립운동 행적은 전무하지만, 그가 서간도에 있을 시기에 맹보순의 행적을 비난하는 유림계의 목소리는 비교적 상세히 실려 있다. 이는 성리학의 순정성과 배타성을 중시하는 당시 일부 유림계 인사들의 완고성에서 비롯한 것으로 보인다. 그러나 개방적이고 적극적인 태도로 국권회복을 위해 나섰던 그 행위가 일부 유림계의 보수적 잣대에 의해서 비난받아야 하는 것인가는 재론의 여지가 있다. 국가 危亡의 순간에는 계급적 이념적 이해관계를 초월하여 국권회복운동에 뛰어드는 것이 正道라고 생각한다면, 맹보순은 그것을 구현한 전형적인 인물에 해당한다고 할 수 있다. 본고에서 『동전문집』의 내용을 검토하고, 그의 독립운동 행적을 살펴본 이유가 바로 여기에 있다.
