This paper examines the patterns of differentiation and presence around the intellectuals at the time of a state of emergency in 1971. At the time of the intellectuals were sensitive to changes in society and history. They criticize and resist state power. But on the other hand it was used by the political culture of the country strategy. On the other hand, they not only submit to state power, were mobilized in the country. Lee Byeong-ju novel is one of the indicators of Kerala verify these aspects. Lee Byeong-ju was showing typical aspects of contemporary intellectuals. But he showed resistance to the stomach forms a built-in logic of self-preservation the world through their stories. And he was lost in narcissism ever heroism. He looked adaptive aspects of the system and distrust for the people. Nevertheless, he received a considerable response from the public at the time. This is the result of his meeting with conservatism of the masses at the time. This study examines one aspect of contemporary intellectuals, writers go is refracted while conforming to the cultural strategy of the ruling era dominated by the power Lee Byeong-ju novel. 이 논문은 1960년대로부터 1970년대에 이르기까지, 1971년 비상사태를 전후한 시기의 지식인의 분화와 존재양상을 고찰해보고자 하였다. 당시의 지식인 그룹은 사회와 역사의 변화에 명민하게 반응하며 체제에 저항하 고 성찰하는 방식으로 존재했으나 다른 한편으로는 국가의 문화정치전략 에 의해 전유되면서 지배체제에 순응하는 양상을 보이기도 했다. 이병주의 소설은 이러한 양상을 확인케 하는 하나의 지표가 된다. 이병 주는 당대의 전형적인 지식인의 양상을 보이고 있었는데, 그는 자신의 소 설을 통해 자기보존의 논리를 내장한 위장적 형태의 세계에 대한 저항을 보여주었다. 또한 나르시즘적 영웅주의에 경도된 그는 민중에 대한 불신과 체제에 대한 순응적 양상을 보였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그는 당시 대중들의 상당한 호응을 받았는데 이는 당시의 보수적 대중들이 가지고 있 던 성공과 발전에 대한 열망, 지식을 통한 세계 해석의 열망과 조우한 결 과이다. 본 연구는 이병주 소설을 통해 당대 지배 권력의 문화통치 전략에 순 응하면서 굴절되어가는 당대 지식인, 작가의 한 양상을 살핀다. 이로써 한 시대의 지식인-작가-지성이 감당해 내야할 사회적인 책무, 혹은 역할이 무 엇인지 질문케 한다는 점에서 그 의의가 있다.
