This article examined the change of connective ending ‘-nikka’ concerned with ‘grammaticization’. In most studies there are many researches related to connective endings functioning as final ending. But there are only a few papers focusing on one ending. On the other hand this article aims to figure out the use of ‘-nikka’ as a final ending especially in colloquial language. There are four criteria considering connective endings functioning as a final ending. First, following clause is omitted or antecedent clause and following clause are inverted. Second, an ending which placed in final ending position has ending accent. Third, a connective ending functioning as a final ending cannot be reverted to a form of ‘-go ha-’. Lastly, a connective ending functioning as a final ending expresses new meaning. Under these four criteria ‘-nikka’ can be functioned as a final ending. Originally ‘-nikka’ is used as a connective ending which has a meaning connecting ‘cause’ or ‘reason’. But ‘-nikka’ functioning as a final ending means ‘cause/reason’, ‘statement’, ‘ground of judgment’ and ‘reprimand’.

본고는 언어 변화와 관련하여 중심적인 주제가 되어 왔던 ‘문법화’의 측면에서 현대국어의 연결어미인 ‘-니까’의 변화를 살펴보았다. 최근에는 연결어미의 종결어미화를 다룬 연구들이 다수 보이지만 이들 연구에서는 하나의 어미에 초점을 맞추기보다는 연결어미의 종결어미화, 즉 문법화 그 자체에 초점을 맞추어 논의를 진행하고 있다. 이와는 달리 본고에서는 원인이나 이유의 의미를 나타내는 ‘-니까’가 현대국어, 특히 구어에서 종결 어미적 쓰임을 보임에 주안점을 두고 논의를 진행하고자 하였다. 연결어 미가 종결어미로 변하였는가를 판단하는 기준은 ‘후행절이 생략되거나 선 행절과 후행절이 도치되는 과정을 거쳤는가’, ‘종결어미 위치에 놓인 어미는 끊어짐의 억양을 가지는가 ’, ‘종결어미화된 연결어미는 ‘-고 하-’의 형태 로 환원 불가능한가’, ‘종결어미화된 연결어미는 새로운 의미를 획득했는 가’ 하는 것이다. 이러한 기준에 따라 본고에서는 현대국어의 ‘-니까’가 종 결어미화 과정에 있는 것으로 보았다. 또한 종결어미적 쓰임을 보이는 ‘- 니까’는 ‘원인’, ‘진술’, ‘판단의 근거’, ‘확인 및 질책’의 의미를 가지는 것을 확인하였다.
