This study comparatively analyzes and reinterprets in depth the oral life history of three female paralympians—Yongsook Hong, Whasook Lee, and Imyeon Kim—that were written over the time span of 2 years from 2015 to 2016. By doing so, it aims to investigate the significance of disability sports to contemporary female paralympians of these three women in historical and social context. The three narrators who suffered from polio at the age of three began to participate in sports in a special school or Jeongnip Center, which is a social service center for the physically challenged. Amid environmental changes through improved perceptions toward disability and increased administrative support since the 1988 Paralympics, they proactively led their lives and thus developed into medal winners who participated in the Paralympics 3-4 times. However, whenever they moved into society or pioneered a new path, they always stumbled upon social barriers as women. Nonetheless, they successfully overcame male-centered stereotypes of sports and biases toward women and disability, fulfilled their roles as members of society, and contributed to advancing social reproduction. Their existential fighting spirit and support from their surroundings together served as an impetus for such accomplishments. They still experienced frustrations whenever their pursuits of horizontal and vertical personal growth were hit by a glass wall or ceiling. In spite of such frustrations, the three narrators ultimately pioneered their capacities in the field of sports by devoting nearly half of their lives until their 50s. Also, their existential lives as female paralympians have laid a foundation for disabled women’s sports in The Korean sports history.
