Hyukpil that takes huge part of Korean traditional font, which is losing its popularity, represents Korean traditional culture that prays for people’s han, hope, hope, and longevity free of disease. With a tint of such lyrical, hyukpil is Korea’s unique, artistic, and creative font that allows unique expressions and depictions of sentiments of joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure. Realizing how sad it is to witness such a beautiful, traditional expressive font disappear and with an aim to retain and transcend traditional culture, this study aims to revisit humorous and beautiful letter painting hyukpil, a representative Korean people’s font art, with an aim to promote Korea’s lettering techniques that is currently dying out.

혁필은 한국 전통 겨레 글씨의 사장되어 가는 문화콘텐츠의 한 맥으로서 백성의 한과 희망, 염원 그리고 무병장수를 기원하는 전통 문화이다. 그러한 서정적 의미와 더불어 혁필은 백성의 희로애락을 대변하는 정서를 예술적인 필법의 독특한 표현을 통해 한국만의 창의적인 서체를 구사하였다. 그 아름다운 전통 표현 필법이 사라지는 안타까운 현실을 지각하고 전통콘텐츠를 유지, 전승하고자 하는 목표 아래 본 연구는 한국의 서민 서체 예술인 혁필의 해학적이고 아름다운 그림 서체를 재조명하고, 사장되어 가는 겨레 글씨 기법을 널리 홍보하고자 연구의 목표를 둔다.
