The purpose of this study was to investigate the function of the Hyang-Gyo as a regional school. The Hyang-gyo had continued as social institutions enlightening country people and as educational institutions fostering the best brains form the locality on a basis of Confucial ideas from Go-Rye to Choson Dynasty.Today, the Hyang-gyo executes education centered on performance showing the result numerical, but it should hold a very important position as a social educational institution in local society through 'Hyang-gyo' for the important education like restoration of humanity and succession of tradition easy to lose in the modern society.This study meditated the meaning of proper use on joint with the existing educational institutions. As result of this study, the function of the Hyang-Gyo should be social education for the citizen.

향교는 한국사회에 있어서 역사와 전통을 지닌 지방문화의 중심지였다. 향교의 기능은 유교사상에 입각하여 인재의 양성과 지방민의 교화라는 두 가지의 역할에 충실하였다. 조선 중기 이후 시대적인 변화에 따라서 향교의 기능은 점차 인재 양성보다는 사회 교육적 측면에서의 풍속의 교화적 기능에 초점을 두었다. 오늘날 대부분의 향교는 교육기관이 아닌 문화재로서 최소한의 역할을 담당하고 있다. 변화하는 시대에 향교가 발전할 수 있는 방안은 그 변화 속에 향교와 다가와야 할 것이며, 평생교육사회에 있어서 향교는 평생교육기관으로서의 역할을 담당할 때 지속될 것이다. 본 연구에서는 향교의 발전방안을 모색하고자 하였다.
