People who dive and collect seafood are everywhere in the world, but divers, both men and women, who do that for a living can only be found in Korea and Japan. Higher education and diverse industrial structure has encouraged more and more women to be socially active, thereby radically bringing down the number of female divers(Haenyeo or Ama) in both countries. This study highlights Ama photos as a source of Haenyeo tourism. Out of the twenty five photos of Ama taken in Shima Peninsula and selected by the photographer Furuya Chikako herself out of her photo collection called “Ama of Shima Peninsula,” college students were asked to choose the images that best represent Ama of Shima Peninsula. This study aims to give life to a somewhat abstract image of Haenyeo using the photos that best represent the image of ‘Japanese Ama’ and to turn their charm into most attractive source of tourism. The result of the analysis on the Ama image of Shima peninsula showed the need for Haenyeo seafood market and Haenyeo tourism information center to be established to serve as a hub of Haenyeo tourism.

자맥질을 하면서 해산물을 캐는 사람들은 세계 곳곳에 존재하지만 생계를 유지하기위해 직업으로 물질을 하는 해녀·해남의 분포지역이 한국과 일본으로만 한정되어 있다. 한일 양국모두 여성들의 고학력화와 산업구조의 다양화로 여성들의 사회진출이 높아짐으로 인하여 해녀 수는 격감하고 있다. 본 연구에서는‘해녀관광’을 실현하는 한방법으로 해녀사진에 주목해 보았다. 사진작가 후루야 치카코가 시마반도에서 찍은「시마반도의 해녀」라는 사진집의 사진 중에서, 작가 본인이 선정한 25점의 해녀사진을 대상으로, 대학생들에게 일본 시마반도 해녀에 관한 대표이미지 사진을 선정하게하였다. 본 연구에서는 일본 해녀(아마)의 이미지가 가장 잘 표출되었다고 생각되는 사진을사용하여 추상적인 해녀이미지를 구체적으로 도출해 보고, 그 이미지로부터 해녀가 가지고 있는 매력요소를 극대화하여 관광자원화 하는 것에 목표를 두고 있다. 일본 시마반도의 해녀이미지 분석결과에서는 해녀들의 수산물판매장과 해녀관광안내센터를 건립해서, 그 시설들을 중심으로 해녀관광을 주도해 나가는 것이 필요하다고나타났다.
