The effect of parental assets on children and adolescents’ educational achievement - Analysis of short- and long-term effect by periods and types of assets -

While numerous studies have explored factors associated with children and adolescents’ educational achievement, little research has been conducted to investigate the role of parental assets in children and adolescents’ educational achievement. Using three waves of the Korea Welfare Panel Study (KOWEPS), this study empirically examines how various types of assets influence children and adolescents’ educational achievement and how those relationships differ across grades. This study further explores a long-term effect of assets on children and adolescents’ educational achievement. Findings from the ordinal logistic regression indicate that net worth, financial assets, and homeownership are positively associated with educational achievement during elementary school years; however these short-term effects of assets disappear during high school years. In terms of long-term asset effects, net worth and financial assets during elementary school years are marginally associated with educational achievement during middle school years. Financial assets during middle school years are positively associated with educational achievement during high school years. Policy implications based on these findings are further discussed, including introducing and expanding asset-based social policies in Korea.
