Background Since the beginning of 2000s, in the field of furniture design, there has been advent of new concept of furniture that embraces personal experiences and pursues artistic value, which is higher aesthetic functions beyond practical functionality of furniture. In this movement, the relationship between furniture and temporality is newly understood. Nevertheless, ‘temporality’, one of important elements in furniture design, is not considered enough. Methods The part ‘General consideration about time’ was done through literature review of literature and philosophy books, and the part ‘The matter of temporality in furniture design’ was done through social and artistic books, articles of design and art journalists, and local resources collected at design exhibitions. Result Based on philosophical research about perception change process of time and temporality by Heidegger, this study contemplated the concept of time. Based on theoretical research about the method of experiencing time in daily life, this study drew a conclusion that ‘temporality’ becomes an important design element in the furniture design. Lastly, by considering cases and characteristics of furniture design based on the concept of temporality, it analyzed practical possibility of the theoretical research result. Conclusion In design, ‘temporality’ is an important design element, and furniture can be proper medium to recover ‘temporality’ with time experienced in daily life. ‘Furniture design based on the concept of temporality’ enables people to experience time through the medium of furniture in the space of daily life, so it is suggested as a design method to experience daily life in unfamiliar ways.

연구배경 2000년대에 접어들면서 가구디자인 분야에서는 가구의 실용적 기능성에서 나아가 개인의 경험까지 포괄하며, 더 높은 심미적 기능인 예술적 가치를 지향하는 새로운 개념의 가구들이 등장하게 된다. 이러한 움직임 속에서 가구와 시간성의 관계는 새롭게 재인식 되고 있다. 그러나 정작 가구디자인에 있어서 중요한 구성요소 중의 하나인 ‘시간성'에 대한 고찰은 많이 이루어지지 않고 있다. 연구방법 본문의 ‘시간에 대한 일반적 고찰’ 부분은 문화, 철학의 전문서적에 의한 문헌 고찰을 통해 이루어졌으며, ‘가구디자인에서 시간성의 문제’ 부분은 사회, 예술 분야의 전문 서적과, 디자인, 예술 전문 기자들의 기사, 디자인 전시를 통해 수집한 현지 자료들을 통하여 이루어졌다. 연구결과 본 연구에서는 시간에 대한 인식 변화과정과 시간성에 대한 하이데거의 철학적 연구를 토대로 시간의 개념을 고찰하였으며, 일상에서 시간을 체험하는 방법에 대한 이론적 연구를 토대로 가구디자인에 있어서 ‘시간성’은 중요한 디자인 요소가 된다는 연구결과를 도출하였다. 마지막으로 시간성에 기반을 둔 가구디자인의 사례와 특징을 검토함으로써, 이론적 연구결과의 실천적 가능성을 분석하였다. 결론 디자인에 있어서 ‘시간성’이 중요한 디자인 요소이며, 가구가 일상에서 시간을 체험하게 하여 ‘시간성’을 회복하게 하는데 적절한 매개체가 될 수 있음을 확인하였다. ‘시간성에 기반을 둔 가구디자인’은 일상생활 공간에서 가구라는 매체를 통하여 시간을 체험하게 함으로써 일상을 낯설게 경험하게 하기위한 하나의 디자인 방법으로 제시된다.
