The work of Evagrius Ponticus cannot be separated from the 'Journey of Spirit'. The theology of spiritual growth is also fully displayed in the work like 'Biblical Scholia, 'Prayer', 'Letter to Melania' as well as his core trilogy. Therefore, the shortcut to Evagrius' understanding of Spirituality can be found in the property of spiritual growth that are evident in his works. Generally the stages of spiritual growth according to Evagrius is known to be in three parts. He explains the epistemological transformation of human spirits using the three constituents of a human being. All his work describe the spiritual transformation through the psychological changes and the function of three constituents of the human spirit. Henceforth, from the modal perspective, his ideology on the basic structure of spiritual growth can be claimed to have been founded on the three stages theory. Nevertheless, the inner system of his theory on the spiritual growth is thoroughly based on his understanding of a human being. His understanding of a human being is formed in three parts; 'Nous', 'Soul' and 'Body'. However the driving force for a human to reach out to God is found in the reciprocal relationship between the spirit and the body. Thus, his understanding of the spiritual growth can be distinguishing into materialistic(body) part and spiritual (mind) part. The practical purpose of the materialistic factor is in achieving the Apatheia and that of spiritual factor lies in meditation or contemplation. His theory consists of the spirit and body of the fallen human, and claims that the route back to God is a practical life or a life. Therefore, the inner composition of Evagrius' spiritual growth is built in two stages. The scholars of Spirituality today can discuss the various theories on the spiritual growth with the help of psychology. However, as shown by Evagrius' system, the understanding of the spiritual growth must begin from the understanding of the human. Although he believes in tripartite exterior with bipartite inner system, he leaves the door of spiritual growth to be understood in many different stages.

기독교 영성학의 핵심 주제 가운데 하나는 영적 성장에 대한 이론이다. 영적 성장에 대한 이해는 중세 뿐 아니라 현대 교회에서도 다양하게 논의 되고 있다. 최근 윌로우크릭 교회의 연구팀이 영적 성장의 단계와 이행 과정을 심층 분석하여 Reveal Where Are You? 과 Follow Me란 제목의 책을 내 놓았다. 제임을 파울러(James W. Fowler)는 물론이고, M 스캇 펙(M. Scott Peck) 같은 정신의학자도 인간의 영적 세계의 성장과정을 분석하고 있다. 이와 같이 오늘날 인간의 영적 성장 과정에 대한 논의는 기독교 영성학, 발달심리학, 교육학 등 다양한 학문분야에서 탐구되고 있다. 기독교 영성학의 영적 성장 이론 역시 이러한 학문과의 관계 속에서 탐구되는 경향이 있다. 이러한 상황에서 필자는 초기사막 교부인 에바그리우스 폰티쿠스의 영성 이해를 통해 영적 성장이론의 원형적 이해를 찾아보고자 한다. 무엇보다 에바그리우스는 4세기 이집트 사막에서 사막교부들의 영성을 체계화 했고, 자신의 많은 저서를 통해 동방교회와 서방교회의 수도원 발달에 지대한 영향을 미쳤다. 본 연구는 에바그리우스의 중요작품을 통해 드러난 영적 성장의 이론들을 분석하여 그의 영적 성장 이론이 어떻게 체계화되었는지를 밝힐 것이다. 에바그리우스는 신플라톤 철학과 오리게네스의 신학에 따라 그의 영성학의 기초를 세웠다. 하지만 그의 영적 성장 이론의 내면 구조는 그 자신이 경험한 독특한 영적 체험과 이해에 근거하고 있다. 사실 그의 영적 성장 이론의 외적 구조는 신플라톤 철학과 오리게네스의 우주론과 인간이해를 바탕으로 한 세 단계 이론으로 잘 알려져 있다. 하지만 그는 인간 정신의 역동적인 관계를 탐구하면서 영적 성장의 기본적 구조를 세 단계가 아닌 두 단계로 이해하고 있다. 물론 에바그리우스는 영적 성장 과정의 다양한 단계를 인정하고 있지만 근원적으로 활동적인 삶과 관상적인 삶이라는 두 단계로 영적 성장의 과정을 보여주고 있다. 이것이 그가 영성 경험을 통해 새롭게 체험한 인간 이해와 인간 정신의 역동적 관계를 통해 체계화한 영성 이론이다. 이러한 에바그리우스의 영적 성장 이해는 오늘날 영성을 이해하는 데 많은 도움을 줄 것이다. 오늘날 많은 학자들이 영적 성장의 단계를 다양하게 설명하지만 영적 성장의 과정에 나타난 육체와 정신의 상호작용에 관해서는 깊이 다루지 못하고 있다. 그리고 영적 성장의 과정에서 인간 정신의 각 기능들이 어떤 역할을 하고, 서로 어떠한 영향 속에서 영적 성장이 이루어지는지를 밝히고 못하고 있다. 하지만 에바그리우스는 집요하리만큼 우주론과 인간 이해에 깊은 관심을 가지고 영적 성장을 연구해 왔다. 그리고 그는 육체와 인간 정신의 관계, 인간 정신 사이의 관계를 탐구하면서 어떻게 영적 성장이 이루어지는지를 밝히고 있다. 따라서 에바그리우스의 영적 성장의 과정에 대한 연구는 오늘날 기독교 영성학의 학문적 탐구뿐 아니라 목회적 돌봄에도 많은 도움을 줄 것이다.
