This study attempts to understand spirituality in the balance between asceticism and mysticism with more focus on mysticism for the purpose of contribution to spiritual formation due to the fact that there have been many mistakes about them with various misunderstandings. This mistake intentionally excludes two factors or leads its distorted usage which results in many damages on the churches and Christians. Within the contemporary society, such misconceptions on mysticism spread over all aspects of society and it made negative effects on Christian spirituality itself. In other words, while the past mistakes of mysticism was to concentrate on ignorant or isolated group in the society, the recent symbolizes that such trend includes the rationalistic theories of many intelligent people. This phase means the result of relation between two unrelated areas without enough mutual understanding so the misunderstanding of Christians’ regarding mysticism is getting worse and more complex. So to overcome these problems and establish right Christian spirituality, while the necessity for the right understanding of mysticism in the church history has been raised, such exploration provides the urgency of many elements in relation to the formation of Christian mysticism in many aspects. From this context, this study will shortly explore Judaism and Greek contemplative idea and their influences to the mysticism of the early church and will try to discover Christian mysticism’s unique features for the reconstruction of the Christian spirituality. That is because the influence from Judaism and Greek philosophical idea were the strongest and the most intensive factors. To do this task, it will concentrate on the socio-historical context of the early church and its reaction to its surroundings. As a conclusion, this study will aim to suggest some conceptual indications for the contemporary churches to accomplish the goal of this study in the aspect of practical theology.

본고는 수덕주의와 신비주의 균형을 통해 영성을 이해하고, 특히 신비주의에 초점을 맞추어 연구를 진행하였다. 이는 양자에 대한 오해 때문에 영성의 이해에 대한 많은 오류가 양산되었다는 판단 때문이다. 이런 오류는 기독교 영성에서 가장 중요한 두 요소의 의도적 배제와 신비체험의 남용이라는 또 다른 오류로 이어져 그리스도인들과 교회를 위한 올바른 영적 성장을 저해하고 있다. 현대사회에서 신비주의에 대한 이런 오류는 사회 전반으로 확대되는 양상으로 나타나며 기독교 영성 자체에 부정적인 영향을 미치고 있다. 즉 신비주의에 대한 과거의 오류들이 주로 무학계층이나 소외계층에 집중된 반면, 최근 경향은 다수 지성인들의 합리적 이론들과 결합된 모습으로 발전하고 있음을 뜻한다. 이런 현상은 기독교 신비주의에 대한 정확한 이해가 결여된 상태에서 다른 영역의 연구결과들을 무리하게 연관시킨 결과이며, 이로 인해 신비주의와 관련된 그리스도인들의 오해 역시 점차 깊고 복잡하게 변하고 있다. 따라서 이런 점들을 보완하고 올바른 영성의 확립을 위해 기독교 역사 내에서 진행되었던 신비주의에 관한 이해를 명확히 할 필요성이 제기되고 있으며, 이런 연구는 기독교 신비주의 형성에 여러 경로로 관계된 요소들을 탐구해야 할 당위성을 부여하고 있다. 이런 상황으로부터 본고는 유대교와 그리스의 관조적 철학에서 나타났던 초월적 신비주의가 초기 기독교에 전달한 영향과 이를 수용한 기독교 공동체의 고유한 특수성을 파악함으로써 기독교 영성의 근간을 재구성하는 작업을 지향했다. 유대교와 그리스의 관조적 이상은 가장 강력하고 집중적인 영향을 기독교 공동체에 전달했던 까닭이다. 이를 위해 초기 교회의 역사적, 사회적 정황에 특히 주목하며 그 속에서 교회가 보여준 특수한 대응방안을 집중적으로 파악하려고 시도한 동시에 그런 특성들을 실천신학 관점에서 개념들로 제안하여 현대 기독교 영성의 발전에 도움이 되는 방안으로 마무리하려고 노력하였다.
