The goal of this writing is to explore the spiritual direction of Thomas Merton who is a prominent representative spiritual writer and spiritual guide of the twentieth century, and to present the characteristics of his spiritual direction. Merton’s spiritual direction is a ministry which helps a directee find the true self and grow into the loving union with God through the true self. The structure of loving union with God through the true self is in line with the structure of Merton’s whole spiritual life. Merton is a person who brought the self as the core subject of contemporary spirituality and spiritual direction which had already been the prominent subject in contemporary psychology, philosophy and theology. Merton emphasizes the significance of revealing ourselves as it is in the process of awakening the true self. Merton calls this process the manifestation of conscience and presents it as his understanding of spiritual direction. Merton shows the self which includes psychological, ethical, theological and spiritual dimensions, and reveals oneself as it is through the manifestation of conscience. This writing will present the manifestation of conscience as the core process of Merton’s spiritual direction. Through exploring his spiritual direction from the perspective of the manifestation of conscience, this paper will present the goal, the content of his spiritual direction, and the process of how the spiritual direction is proceeded.

이 글의 목적은 20세기 대표적인 영적 작가요 안내자인 토마스 머튼의 영적지도를 고찰하여 그의 영적 지도의 특성을 제시하는 것이다. 머튼의 영적지도는 피지도자가 참 자기를 발견하고, 그 참자기를 통하여 하나님과의 사랑의 일치로 나아가도록 도와주는 사역이다. 참자기를 통한 하나님과의 사랑의 일치라는 구조는 머튼 전체의 영성 생활에 대한 구조와도 맥을 같이 한다. 머튼은 현대 심리학, 철학, 신학에서 이미 중요한 주제가 된 자기(self)를 현대 영성과 영적 지도의 핵심 주제로 가져온 인물이다. 머튼은 참자기가 깨어나는 과정에서 자신을 있는 그대로 보고 드러내는 것이 매우 중요함을 강조하는데, 이를 특별히 “양심표명”이라 명하면서 자신의 영적 지도를 독특하게 제시한다. 머튼의 양심표명은 피지도자의 내면이나 삶을 단순히 심리적이거나 도덕적 의식의 차원에서만 다루는 것이 아니라 신학적이고 영적인 차원까지를 다루는 것을 포함한다. 그것은 신비로운 참자기에 대한 포괄적인 이해를 가지고 자기 가운데 활동하시는 신비로운 하나님의 현존과 그분의 은총의 손길, 하나님 안에 있는 자기를 있는 그대로 보는 것을 의미한다. 이 글은 머튼의 영적 지도의 핵심이 양심표명(manifestation of conscience)에 있음을 밝히고, 양심 표명의 관점에서 머튼의 영적 지도를 살펴봄을 통해서 현대 영적지도에 대한 선구자적인 가르침을 준 머튼의 영적 지도에 대한 이해를 갖게 해줄 뿐만 아니라, 영적 지도의 진정한 목적, 영적 지도의 내용, 그리고 어떻게 영적 지도가 이루어져야 하는지에 대한 소중한 통찰을 제공해 줄 것이다.
