In 1800s, there was a scholar as well as commander of loyal troops, who tried to save the nation just before its collapse. He was Lee, hangro, a master of Hwaseo hakpa. This research aimed at an overview of loyalty spirit of Hwaseo hakpa Wijeong cheoksaron. The phased development of this research was conducted along with loyal spirit of modernity and problem presentation/understanding of Wijeong cheoksaron and its structure/ theoretical basis of loyalty spirit/ significance of 21st century time spirit and prospect. Hwaseo hakpa was concerned about the time spirit of that period mainly with Hwaseo Lee, hangro, which enhanced and discussed the problem as Shimseol, etc., problem of Seongrihak. Above all, their Cheoksa loyalty spirit highly regarded Jonju(尊周), based on Daeiltong idea of Chunchu. Chunchu idea based on Wijeongcheock idea and loyalty spirit was the historical expression of Confucius' benevolence idea. It is within bounds to say that all culture and ideas were based on the environment of the times. Theoretical basis of Hwaseo hakpa was the same. In this crisis situation, loyalty spirit of Wijeong cheoksa is efficiently applicable theory also in the 21st century. That is, Hwaseohakpa intended to approach the culture of imperialism powers of Seosedongjeom of that period as the target of cheoksa loyalty and resisted through righteous army movement. In this 21st century's turbulent period, this research prospects that it is time to transform and apply the time spirit of Wijeong cheoksa loyalty spirit, such as authenticity, continuity, and moral value, etc. to which Hwaseo hakpa held on.

화서학파의 종장은 이항로이다. 본 논고의 목표는 화서학파 위정척 사론의 의리정신이 개관이다. 본 논고의 차제는 근대성의 의리정신과 문제제기/ 위정척사론의 이해와 구조/ 의리정신의 이론적 기초/ 21세 기 시대정신의 의의와 전망이다. 화서학파는 화서 이항로를 종장으로 당시의 시대정신을 고민하였다. 이 중심은 성리학의 문제인 심설 등의 문제등을 토론하고 강학하였다. 먼저 화서학파의 척사의리는 春秋대일통사상에 기초하는 것으로 尊周 를 중시했다. 위정척사상과 의리정신에 근거한 춘추사상은 공자의 인 의사상의 역사적 표현이다. 모든 문화와 사상은 그 시대적 환경에 기인 한다고 보아도 과언이 아니다. 화서학파의 이론적 기초도 동일하다. 이 러한 위기 상황에서 위정척사의 의리정신은 21세기에도 효율적으로 적용가능한 이론이다. 즉 화서학파는 당시 서세동점의 제국주의 열강 의 문물은 척사의리의 대상으로 접근하고 의병운동으로 저항하였다. 21세기 난세의 시대에 본 논고에서는 정통과 도통, 도덕적 가치 등 화 서학파가 견지한 위정척사 의리정신의 시대정신을 변용하고 적용할 때 임을 전망해 본다.
