With a focus on the category of representation, this paper presents an examination of the significance of the Sewol ferry disaster documentary film Diving Bell, which recorded a series of conflicts surrounding the deployment and removal of the diving bells during the passenger rescue process. In their own way, a multitude of mass media started to record the reality of the situation immediately after the ferry disaster, and this was conveyed to the public through a representation process. Irrelevance and intervention during this process created distortions, omissions, and reductions that appeared to result from the selection and arrangement of the footage. The mainstream mass media covering the Sewol ferry disaster devised a holistic virtuality by reporting as if what they had been covering was based on fact. On the other hand, the documentary Diving Bell addressed the reality in a “tell-it-like-it-is” manner, but the 'veracity' of the film’s content has been questioned. In this study, the possibilities and limitations of Diving Bell in terms of its aesthetic achievements are investigated according to what of known in South Korea as the 'truth' measure by making a comparison between the style of Diving Bell and the aesthetic achievements of modern documentaries, as identified during the historic arrangement of the relationship between documentary representation and this definition of truth.

본 논문은 세월호사건 이후 실종자 구조 과정에서 ‘다이빙벨’의 투입과 철수 과정에서 벌어진 일련의 갈등을 기록한 다큐멘터리 영화 <다이빙벨>의 미학을 재현의 범주에서 살펴보았다. 수많은 미디어들이 세월호사건 발생 직후부터 다양한 방식으로 현실을 기록하기 시작했고, 재현의 과정을 통해 수용자들에게 전달되었다. 이 과정에서 사건에 거리와 개입이 발생하고, 장면의 선택과 배열에 의한 왜곡·누락·축소되는 문제가 드러났다. 세월호 사건을 다룬 주류 미디어인 언론이 현실에 존재하지 않았던 것을 마치 실재했던 것처럼 보도하면서 총체적인 가상성을 만들어 냈다면, 다큐멘터리 영화 <다이빙벨>은 ‘있는 그대로의 현실’을 다루면서도 그 내용의 ‘진실’을 의심받고 있다. 이 글은 다큐멘터리의 재현과 ‘진실’의 역사적인 관계 속에서 발견한 현대 다큐멘터리의 미학적 성취를 <다이빙벨>의 양식과 견주어 살펴보면서 대한민국의 시대적 ‘진실’과 마주한 <다이빙벨>이 현실에서 이룬 미학의 가능성과 한계가 무엇인지 고찰하였다.
