This paper is focused on the primary function of Akjang, which is the song that used at Royal Court Ceremony. Accordingly, it emphasized discussion about Akjang within ceremony. For that, it reviewed relationship between Akjang and ceremony first. Ceremony is not a common social phenomenon but a very situational and strategic event, so a kind of “formalization” happens. Royal rituals is also not a practice of standardized norms but a place that shows the results of political opinion between king and bureaucrats. The power of deriving ceremony was actually in special circumstances between them. Therefore, this paper is focused on how power relations emerged and what kind of new meaning was created. And Akjang also should be construed as ceremony which did function for newly created meaning. To verify the argument, I examined "resued" Akjang that are often considered musical cliches. This study examined the reused Akjang that was composed in Sukjong 39 (1713) and performed four times in ceremonies. I found that each ceremony was at different times and for different purposes and that the four performance was tailored each time to convey a political message to contemporaries.

이 글은 악장이 ‘궁중의식에 사용되는 노래’라는 본래 기능을 중시하여, 악장을 의례 속에서 논해야 함을 다루었다. 이를 위해 먼저 의례와 악장의 관계를 재조명했다. 의례는 인간 삶의 보편적인 현상이 아니라, 매우 상황적이고 전략적이기 때문에 ‘의례화’가 일어난다. 국가 의례 역시 규격화된 규범의 실천이 아니라, 왕과 관료들 사이 정치적 견해의 각축의 결과로 나타나는 현장이었다. 실제로 의례를 이끌어내는 동력은 왕과 관료들의 특수한 정황들에 있었다. 그러므로 우리는 의례를 통해 어떠한 권력 관계가 편성되고 새로운 의미가 창출되는지에 주목해야 한다. 따라서 악장은 의례가 새로 조직한 의미를 위해 기능하는 것으로 해석되어야 한다. 이를 입증하기 위해, 악장들 중 진부하게 여겨지는 ‘재사용’ 악장을 새롭게 분석하였다. 여기서는 숙종39(계사, 1713)에 만들어지고 총 4번의 의례에서 사용된 악장을 대상으로 하였다. 네 번은 모두 의례 종류와 개최연도가 다른 의례들이었고, 각각의 의례들은 당시의 중요한 정치적 사안과 관련되었으며, 그에 따라 동일한 악장임에도 불구하고 매번 의미를 달리하며 불러졌음을 밝혔다.
