Andy Clark and David Chalmers, claiming that our cognitive process should be understood as something genuinely extended outward beyond our skull, suggests a new understanding and perspective on the future direction of cognitive science. Recently there has been a lot of philosophical discussions for this new idea. This paper examines critically their thesis called the extended mind or active externalism. Firstly, I review the issues and differences between internalism and externalism regarding our understanding of the core semantic notions, such as “meaning” and “concept,” and note that there are some serious problems with externalism. And then, following Robert Brandom’s perspectives on semantics and cognitive science, I propose that the real extension of the mind is understood in terms of the development of specific capacity which can hold and use “concepts.” Finally, based on those discussions, I suggest briefly a new direction of cognitive science.

앤디 클락과 데이비드 찰머스는 우리의 인지과정이 우리의 뇌를 둘러싼 두개골을 넘어서서 바깥으로 확장되어 있는 것으로 이해해야 한다는 소위 확장된 마음을 주장하면서, 인지과학의 발전 방향에 대한 새로운 이해와 전망을 제시한다. 최근 이러한 확장된 마음 논제에 대해서 국내외에서 많은 철학적 논의가 이루어지고 있다. 본 논문은 적극적 외재주의라고 불리는 이 철학적 견해를 비판적으로 고찰한다. 우선, 의미론적인 차원에서 “개념”과 “의미”의 이해와 관련된 내재주의와 외재주의 간의 견해 차이와 쟁점을 검토하고, “개념”과 “의미”에 대한 외재주의적 관점이 어떤 문제점을 갖고 있는지 살펴본다. 그런 다음, 로버트 브랜덤의 의미론적인 견해와 인지과학 비판을 바탕으로, 마음의 진정한 확장은 뇌의 안과 밖 같은 물리적인 관점에서가 아니라 “개념”을 보유하고 사용할 수 있는 능력의 발전이라는 차원에서 이해되어야 한다는 주장을 검토한다. 이를 통해, 마음의 확장은 무생물 ⇒ 감각지각적 존재자 ⇒ 합리적 존재자 ⇒ 논리적 존재자의 단계적 발전에 상응하는 과정으로 이해되어야 하며, 이런 측면에서 인지과학이 나아가야할 하나의 방향을 제시한다.
