Park, Yunki. “Reading City of Glass as a Post-modern Fiction.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 42.3 (2016): 1-22. The aim of this paper is to analyze City of Glass in terms of the detective genre and as a post-modern fiction. Paul Auster’s City of Glass appeared during the post-modern period and can be classified as a post-modern fiction in more ways than one. Daniel Quinn, assuming the role of the detective Paul Auster, is faced increasingly with the failure of his own attempts to solve the case and later loses his identity completely. In spite of conventional elements of traditional detective stories, the role of the detective has totally changed in this novel. Uncertainty, doubt, and indecision reign in the story as no decision can necessarily be a correct one. Actually, City of Glass does not meet the reader’s expectations for detective stories. Just as post-modernist texts thoroughly make the readers active participants during the reading process, City of Glass as a post-modern fiction renders us active readers. (Paichai University)
