An Idea of “the unity of heaven and human(天人合一)” is ‘an ultimate confucian ideal’ which is aiming at settling down(安身立命) and at the same time is a typical feature showing a confucian idea intensively. The points of this study deal with not only the unity of heaven and human that is not only an essential point which can be achieved by man but also a significance and a value during process of getting the unity of heaven and human. In this paper, this study does not conclude that the unity of heaven and human is just the ultimate aim. This study, however, examined nature of studying Confucianism dealing with the process of making the unity in each position of heaven and human. This study uses inductive inference to understand the unity of heaven and human. At the first, this study shows the significance of heaven as reason of existence of human through the interpretation of adding the human at the side of heaven. Secondly, this study emphasizes the importance of human’s self-cultivating and learning through the interpretation of adding heaven at the side of human. Thirdly, In a relation between heaven’s will and a character, Li(理) is given to human through heaven’s will. With this Li as nature, this study examines a basis of possibility of combination to heaven at the position of human and, at the same time, examines a basis of an actual method to carry out the unity of heaven and human in the relationship between the way of heaven and the way of human. Finally, this study shows that discussion about the actual method of the unity of heaven and human is the combination of perception and practical study. at this point, through the examination of Cheng(誠) and Humanity(仁), this study examines that Cheng and Humanity is ontological principle. it, then, shows the combination of perception and practical study as a state of the unity of heaven and human.

천인합일은 안신입명(安身立命)을 지향하는 ‘유학의 궁극적 이상’임과 동시에 사실상 유학사상을 집약적으로 드러내는 유학의 대표적인 특징이다. 필자가 여기에서 주목하는 점은 천인합일이 유가사상에서 인간이 이루어야 할 궁극지 점임은 말할 것도 없거니와 천인합일이 이루어지는 과정 속에서의 그 의의와 가치이다. 필자는 천인합일을 궁극적인 목표에서 그 내용을 단정 짓기보다 각 하늘(天)과 인간(人) 의 입장에서 합일을 이루어가는 과정을 살펴봄으로써, 유학 공부의 성격을 설명하고자 한다. 천인합일에 대한 귀납적 해석 방법을 사용하는데, 우선은 하늘의 입장에서 인간을 합하 는 방향의 해석을 통해, 하늘의 인간의 존재근거로서의 의의를 드러낸다. 다음으로는 인 간의 입장에서 하늘을 합하는 방향의 해석을 통해, 인간의 실천도덕 수양공부의 중요성 을 부각시킨다. 그리고, 천명과 인성의 관계에서 천명을 통하여 인간에게 부여하는 리(理)를 본성으로 삼아 인간의 입장에서 하늘에 합치될 수 있는 가능성의 근거를 마련함과 동시에, 천도와 인도의 관계를 통해, 천인합일을 실행하는 구체적인 방법론의 근거를 마련한다. 마지막으로, 천인합일의 실제 구현방법에 대한 논의는 결국 천인합일은 인식과 실천공 부의 결합물이다. 이에, 천입합일의 경지인 성(誠)과 인(仁)에 대한 검토를 시도한다. 성 (誠)과 인(仁)이 본체론적 원리임과 동시에 인간의 도덕행위의 실천원리임을 검토함으로 천인합일의 경지로서 인식과 실천공부의 결합물임을 밝힌다.
