Although our country possesses an enormous number of classical books well preserved in original form, the awareness of approaching and exploiting them has not been properly encouraged. Therefore when we talk about ‘Classical literature in Chinese language’ (漢文), ‘classical culture and institutions’ (古文獻) or ‘traditional thought’ (傳統思想), what we receive are nothing but the shakes of the head and waves of the hands (to express the difficulty and powerless). It is the result of the old-fashioned custom according to which we could not properly create our own traditional culture as well as viewpoints on history or values. In order to overcome that limitation, the necessity to develop the subjects of ‘national history’ (國史), ‘ethics’ (道德), ‘morality’ (倫理) or ‘Classical literature in Chinese language’ (漢文) at school is emphasized, but in the current education system that focuses only on entrance exams, it is hard to be realized. However, in this difficult situation for the development of the classical education and traditional culture, there still are activities trying to preserve our long-standing traditions, that is to say the researches on the ‘classics’ (經書) which are carried out by scholars who spend much time and effect to maintain the connection with the pass. But it cannot be denied that those researches - on ‘classics’ or one given figure’s viewpoint of classics - have gone through a process of quantitative expansion with several weak points and restrictions. Hereupon I try to consider the current situation of the research on the classics, and state some opinions – though simple – on the way the education of classics must follow. When ruminating the image of ourselves building a multi-cultural society, I expect that the ‘research on classics’ can overcome the simple theoretical discussions to play the role of intellectual basis of the future. In this significance, the research on Korean classics needs to focus on and demonstrate the identity (體), the relationship (人) and the creative knowledge (知) that are inherent in our classical heritage.

우리 대한민국의 문화가 가지고 있는 가장 중요한 특징 가운데 하나는 ‘기록문화’라는 점에 있다. 우리나라는 수많은 문헌과 자료들을 원형 그대로 소지하고 있음에도 불구하 고, 이들을 접하고자 하는 의식이 긍정적이지 못하였다. 따라서 ‘漢文古典’ 또는 ‘古文獻’ 이나 ‘傳統思想’이라 운운하면 고개를 흔들고 손사래를 내젓는다. 이것은 전통문화와 역 사관 그리고 가치관을 제대로 정립시키지 못한 오랜 舊習으로부터 야기된 것이다. 이러 한 선입견을 타개하기 위하여 ‘國史’와 ‘道德’・‘倫理’ 또는 ‘漢文’ 교과의 강화가 필요함 을 절감하면서도, 입시 위주의 편향적인 교육체제下에서는 꿈도 꾸지 못하고 있는 형편 이다. 이러한 고전교육과 전통문화 창달에 관한 총체적 어려움과 난항 속에서도 그 명맥을 유 지할 수 있었던 것은 우리의 오랜 삶을 지탱하며 나침반의 역할을 자임해 준 ‘經學’ 연구 에 있었고, 이 끈을 놓지 않으려는 연구자들의 처절한 인내와 땀의 결실이 있었기 때문이다. 그러나 경서 연구, 일명 경학연구가 양적 팽창과정을 거치면서 적지 않은 단점과 한계 들이 노출되고 있었음 또한 부인할 수 없는 사실일 것이다. 이에 필자는 경학 연구의 현주소를 소박하게 검토해보고, 평소 소신에 따라 경서 공부 가 나아가야 할 길에 대하여 몇 자 언급하기로 한다. 다문화사회를 영위하는 우리들의 자화상을 反芻해 볼 때, ‘경학’은 단순히 학술적 담론을 넘어 우리 미래의 지적 토대 역할에 도 큰 의미를 남겨줄 것으로 기대된다. 이러한 의미에서 한국경학 연구는 ‘體人知’가 필 요하다는 것이다. 경학은 우리의 정체성[體]과, 관계성[人], 그리고 창조적 지식[知]을 이 끌어낼 수 있는 방향으로 전환되어야 할 것이다.
