TyeonRoRyeokDyeong is the title of first edition translated PartⅠ of John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s progress into Korean by Gale couple. TyeonRoRyeokDyeong was published two type in 1895. The woodblock edition was printed on Korean paper by the Trilingual Press in Seoul and the new metal edition was printed on modern Chinese paper in Shang-hai. These are classical work published by printing methods of Korean and the West. Both editions were illustrated with forty-two of charming line-drawings by a Wonsan artist, Kim Jun-geun. So far, we couldn’t see so many Korean-style line-drawings inserted in a book in publishing history of Korea. I inspected the woodblock and the woodblock edition besides the new metal edition of first edition, find out publication method and the identity of both editions. Both editions may be classed as the woodblock edition of high prices for foreigners and the new metal edition of low price for Koreans. There is another important fact that engraved line-drawings after cutting the woodblock in half.

『텬로력뎡』이란 영국의 존 번연이 지은 『The Pilgrim’s Progress』 제1부를 한글로 번역하여 간행한 초판본 서명이다. 『텬로력뎡』은 1895년에 국내의 The Trilingual Press에서는 목판, 중국 상해의 인쇄소에서는 신활자본으로 간행되는 등 두 종류의 판본으로 유통되었다. 이렇게 『텬로력뎡』은 우리의 전통적인 인쇄방식과 서양의 인쇄방식을 함께 이용하여 완성된 작품이다. 또한 한국식 인물삽화 42점을 수록한 것은 우리의 출판인쇄사에서 일찍이 볼 수 없는 일이다. 이 글에서는 목판본과 일부 현전 목판 그리고 국내외에 전존하는 신활자본들을 살펴 『텬로력뎡』의 간행방식과 판본학적 정체성을 살폈다. 이 글을 통해 초판본 『텬로력뎡』 중에서 고가의 목판본은 외국인, 저가의 신활자본은 내국인을 대상으로 판매되었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 또 특이한 점은 한국식 삽화가 42점이나 수록되었고, 이 삽화가 배치된 목판은 반으로 절단한 다음 판각되었다는 점이다.
