Lewis Mumford surveyed the history and civilization of humanity in the way that technics and art are essential tendencies of human nature. In modern times, because technics and art were seriously divided and furthermore excessive technics oppressed artistic instincts of human, thus crisis of humanity was caused. Therefore, he claimed that the harmonious balance between technics and art could be a foundation of overcoming crisis of human nature. In Zhuangzi (『莊子』), it warns dangers of technics but, at the same time, admires the technicians who achieved a high level of mental states through training technologies. Those technicians not only physically mastered the high-level technologies but also, based on this, they mentally reached the state of ‘dao (道)’. Since then, these have deeply influenced on Chinese art. This dissertation reviews the harmonious balance between technics and art, which is suggested by Mumford, from the perspective of technicians by Zhuangzi. It deals with Mumford’s perspective on technics and art by contrasting Zhuangzi‘s ‘things (物)’ and ‘self (我)’, ‘usefulness (有用)’ and ‘uselessness (無用)’. Moreover it compares the achieved states of technics and ‘dao’. By suggesting the possibilities of harmony of technics and art, it can provide proper directionality of modern technology.

루이스 멈포드는 기술과 예술이 인간 본성의 근본적인 두 성향이라는 관점에서 인류의 역사와 문명을 조망하였다. 그는 현대에 들어 예술과 기술이 심각하게 분열하였고, 과도해진 기술이 인간의 예술적 측면을 억압함으로써 인간성의 위기를 초래했으며, 따라서 기술과 예술의 조화로운 균형이야말로 인간성의 위기를 극복할 수 있는 토대라고 진단한다. 『장자』는 기술의 위험성을 경고하기도 하지만 동시에 기술을 통하여 높은 수준의 정신적 성취를 이룬 기술인들을 찬양한다. 이들 기술인들은 일을 통하여 신체적으로 고도의 기술을 달성했을 뿐 아니라 이를 바탕으로 도의 경지로 나아감으로써 이후 중국예술에 막대한 영향을 미쳤다. 본 연구는 멈포드가 현대 기술문명에 제시한 기술과 예술의 조화로운 균형을 『장자』의 기술인들에서 탐색해 본다. 멈포드의 기술과 예술에 대한 관점을 장자의 물(物)과 아(我), 유용(有用)과 무용(無用)의 관점으로 대비하여 서술하고 나아가 기술의 경지와 도의 경지를 비교한다. 이를 통하여 심미와 기술의 조화의 가능성을 제시함으로써 현대 기술의 나아갈 방향에 단초를 제공할 수 있을 것이다.
