This article is an approach to the necessity and relationship of spirituality and education in the 21st century risk society. It begins with the arguments about the perspective on 21st century risk society mentioned by futurists and human sociologists, for examples, A futurist Rebeca D. Costa, a sociologist Richard Sennett, a literary critic Byungcheol Han, and a liberation theologian Jungmo Sung. From those perspectives, it is said that the cause of the risk society has been from the problems of the neo-liberalistic capitalism in which create not only segregation, selfishness, fearfulness and anxiety in personal life, but also competition, discrimination and dehumanization in the social life. The author argues that its results are from the education separated from spirituality. The education has been stressed on selfish possession and individualistic ability based on both the capitalistic knowledge and the scientific one. The primary resource is from education . As a spiritualist and educator, both Thomas Merton and Park J. Palmer are also introduced in this article and focused on an educational approach to the spirituality and education by/through prayer. It is a true self that we help people seek in our dehumanized society which is the one-sided or separated understanding of self. Accordingly, this article concludes with a suggestion on the necessity of and relationship between the spirituality and education for getting or recovering the wholistic self by/through prayer in the 21st century risk society.

이글은 21세기의 위기사회를 미래학자들과 인문사회학자들의 시각들, 예를 들면 미래학자로서 레베카 코스타(Rebecca D, Costa), 경제사회학자 리차드 세넷(Richard Sennett), 문예비평가 한병철, 해방신학자인 성정모 등 다양한 학자들을 통해 진단해 보고, 신자유주의 체제의 자본주의로부터 발생하는 위기사회의 모습을 제시하고자 했다. 여기서 위기사회란 신자유주의 자본주의 체제로부터 유래된 분열과 이기심, 두려움과 불안을 조성하는 개인의 내적 인격 장애사회이며, 외향적 소유와 성과중심의 삶으로 경쟁과 차별로 비인간화 되어가는 사회를 말한다. 이러한 사회 원인은 오늘날 현대 과학기술 중심의 지식과 자본주의 지식을 바탕으로 한 성과사회를 지향하는 교육의 결과로 지적하고자 했다. 그리고 그러한 교육의 위기는 영성이 분리된 지나친 지식중심의 교육의 결과로 생명력을 잃어버린 교육으로 보았다. 더 나아가 그 대안을 찾기 위해 다시 참 인간성 회복, 즉 자기 정체성과 소명을 찾아 내면의 깊이로 들어가는 삶으로 인도하는 예수의 가르침을 중심으로 영성과 교육을 관계시켜 전개하는 토마스 머튼과 파커 파머와 같은 기독교 영성가들의 교육론, 즉 기도를 통한 가르침과 영성에서 그 대안으로 삼고자 했다.
