The Purpose of this paper is chasing the aspect and meaning of the classical novels printed by modern publication in bookstore SeChangSeoGuan and an owner Shin Tae-sam. SeChangSeoGuan was very active in publishing classical novels after restoration of independence of Korea. But another bookstore publishing classical novels were very active in publishing from 1910s to 1930s, the era under the colonial administration of imperial Japan. So until now SeChangSeoGuan didn't receive attention from researcher of Korean classical novel. SeChangSeoGuan mainly published 'heroic novels', 'historic novels', 'historic stories'. Shin Tae-sam wanted to publish classical novels can enlighten people of Korea. And he took part in resistance movement, his behavior was though insignificant from the point of macroscopic view but significant from the point of microscopic view. Through the SeChangSeoGuan and an owner Shin Tae-sam, we can consider people who agonized history and nation in turbulent era.

본 논문은 해방 이후에 활자본 고전소설을 활발하게 간행한 신태삼과 세창서관에 대해 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 세창서관은 가장 많은 활자본 고전소설을 간행한 서적상임에도 활발히 간행한 시기가 해방 이후인 이유로 그리 주목을 받지 못했다. 그러나 오히려 해방 이후, 즉 고전소설의 시대적 소명이 희미해진 시기에 상당한 양의 활자본 고전소설을 간행했다는 사실로부터 세창서관의 의미를 찾을 수 있을 것이다. 세창서관은 고전소설 중에서도 ‘영웅적 인물의 이야기’, ‘실제 역사를 배경으로 한 이야기’, ‘실기류’ 등을 중점적으로 간행하였다. 이는 신태삼이 격동의 시대를 극복할 수 있는 영웅적 인물 형상, 혹은 과거 역사에서 모범이 될 만한 내용을 담은 작품들에 관심을 갖고 있었음을 말해준다. 앞서 일제강점기 검열 목록에 나타난 민중적 면모 또한 이러한 맥락과 닿아 있다고 추정할 수 있다. 이렇게 볼 때 해방 이후 활발한 활동을 한 신태삼의 출판 활동과 행적은 시대와 역사에 대한 고민과 무관하지 않은 것으로 보인다.
