This study starts with an awareness that there is few concern about the work and role of pastors' wives in the rural area and researchers have not dealt with them in Korean culture. Therefore, it attempts to analyze their experiences of which roles they play and why they do so. In order to develop these questions, I interviewed eight local church pastors' wives who are taking part in church works, and have examined their experiences. The main result of this interview can be summarized as follows. Firstly, the interviewees had participated in their church works in various ways. They followed their church customs on the matter of their work. If there had been no church convention on a certain matter, they tended to decide whether to work or not by themselves. Basically, the interviewees thought that they should help their husband's pastoral work. Secondly, they recognized that their role and church status were somewhat vague. They also believed that they were leaders who did not become known or should not be prominent. In this sense, they considered that they were different from women pastors and elders who had official positions. In general, it can be said that pastors' wives do not have independent leadership since their leadership closely relies on their husbands'. It concludes that the work and leadership of pastors' wives are under the influence of patriarchy. Thirdly, the interviewees were of the opinion that they should play mother's role in church. Their image of mother was traditional so that they supposed to be quiet, obedient and sacrificial. It was, directly and indirectly, related with their stress. On the whole, they attempted to satisfy the expectation of church members, which caused stress. The participants thought that the life of pastor's wife was better than that in the past since they could work inside and outside church. In conclusion, the role of pastor's wife in church was the extension of women's role in Korean tradition, which had been deeply affected by Confucianism.

본 연구는 기존 연구들이 소도시의 소형교회 사모들의 사역이나 역할에 거의 관심을 기울이지 않은 데서 비롯되었다. 그래서 소도시의 사모들이 어떤 역할을 하고 있는지 그리고 왜 그런 사역과 역할을 하고 있는지에 대한 그들의 직접적인 경험을 문화적 측면에서 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 현재 교회에서 사역에 직접 참여하고 있는 소도시의 소형교회 사모들 8명을 대상으로 심층 인터뷰를 실시하였고, 자료를 분석하는 과정에서 문화적 해석을 시도했다. 연구결과 소도시의 소형교회 사모들은 교회 안에서 다양한 사역을 하고 있음에도 불구하고 그들은 그들의 위치와 역할을 명확하게 규정하지 못했다. 참여자들은 스스로를 리더라고 생각하지 않았고, 교회의 어머니라는 이미지를 내재하고 있었다. 그들이 부분적으로 언급했던 사모의 역할은 하나의 큰 맥락으로 범주화시킬 수 있었는데, 그것은 유교적 가부장제 속의 여성의 성역할이었다. 사모의 역할은 결국 한국적 형태의 가부장제 속의 여성들의 역할이 변형된 형태였다. 인터뷰 분석결과 연구 참여자들은 독립된 객체가 아니라 남편의 직위에 편승되어 있는 의존된 존재로 자신들을 묘사하고 있다는 것을 발견했다. 여성인 사모는 남성인 그들의 남편을 도와주는 보조자로서의 역할을 하고 있었고, 사모들의 삶은 남편의 목회와 긴밀하게 연결되어 있었다. 사모는 목회에 직·간접적으로 영향을 미치고 있고 목사인 남편과 동역을 하고 있다고 생각했기 때문에 스스로 평신도라고 생각하지 않았다. 하지만 그들은 리더십을 가지고 일을 하거나 어떤 결정을 할 수 없기 때문에 리더라고도 생각하지 않았다. 사모역할에는 한국 문화적 요소들도 들어있었는데, 말없이 가족을 위해 뒤에서 희생하고 뒷바라지 하는 한국의 전통적인 어머니 역할에 대한 것들이 그런 것 중에 하나였다. 연구참여자들이 언급한 교회의 어머니 역할은 유교적 가부장제속의 어머니 이미지를 변형한 것으로서 지극히 한국적인 것이었다. 이러한 연구결과는 한국 교회의 사모역할을 이해하는 데 근본적인 토대를 제공해 주며, 한국 교회 사모들에 대한 연구의 신학적 준거를 제공할 수 있다고 하겠다.
