The purpose of this study is to examine a possibility of the religious symbol and human creativity, especially in using light as a significant liturgical element. Although the form and size of worship space in Christianity have begun to change in modern times, the use of light are still insufficient. Rather, the use of light in the past times were more effective to let people experience the presence of the ultimate being in worship space. In fact the use of light in worship space used to be limited as a role of lighting the space. But light does not stop simply at the primary functional level of illuminating darkness. Light has assumed a significant symbol in inspiring spiritual devotion by being used in various methods and arrangements. The light’s symbolic function creates the display of sanctity or divine manifestation in worship spaces. The meaning of symbol is the key to understand the dynamics of human creativity in worship space. Creativity is closely related to the use of light in worship space. Light is a great elements which facilitates the use of human creativity by participating in the reality of that for which it stands. This study examines this dynamics between light’s symbolic function and human creativity in Christian worship space.

이 연구의 목적은 종교적인 상징과 인간의 창의력의 가능성을 탐구하는데 있다. 특별히 기독교 예배 공간에서 상징으로써의 빛의 사용을 통해 이러한 상징과 창의력의 가능성을 탐구하고자 한다. 오늘날 형식이나 크기등 기독교 예배공간의 변화가 계속 이루어지고 있지만 빛의 사용이나 배열에 있어서만큼은 여전히 제한되어 있고 충분하지 않다. 오히려 과거 예배공간에서의 빛의 사용이 초월적인 실재를 경험하게 하는데 더 효과적이었다. 예배 공간에서의 빛의 사용은 어두움을 밝히는 단순히 기본적인 수준에서의 조명 이상의 의미를 가지고 있다. 과거부터 빛은 예배 공간에서 다양한 방법과 배열을 통해 어떤 초월적인 영적 경험을 가능하게 하는 중요한 상징으로 다루어져 왔다. 때로 상징으로써의 빛의 기능은 예배 공간에서 어떤 신성함과 거룩함이 나타나도록 분위기를 창조해내기도 한다. 그런 점에서 볼 때 상징은 예배공간에서 인간의 창의력이 생성되고 사용되도록 하는 역학을 이해하는 중요한 열쇠이다. 주목해야 할 것은 창의력이 예배 공간에서의 빛의 사용과 밀접하게 연관되어 있다는 것이다. 실재로 빛은 상징화된 실재에 참여함으로 창의력의 사용을 촉진한다. 이 논문은 예배공간에서의 상징으로써의 빛과 창의력에 대한 역할을 탐구하고 있다.
