In recent years, academic and public discourse have become preoccupied with economic inequality, which has risen in many countries. Thomas Piketty’s Capital in the Twenty-First Century the most talked-about book political economy to have appeared in recent years. His book is primarily a book about the history of the distribution of income and wealth. Piketty presents the body of historical evidence, and analyzes the economic, social and political processes that can account for the inequal distribution of income and wealth. He clarifies the role played by r>g in his analysis of wealth inequality. According to his analysis, the size of the gap between r and g where r is the rate of return on capital and g is the economy’s growth rate, is on of the import forces that can account for the inequal distribution of income and wealth. The author’s aim of this article is to point out Capital in the Twenty-First Century’ contributions to a critical debate around economic inequality. In contrast with Piketty’a book, this paper intends to find the methodological application to the moral education on inequality in high school.

불평등에 대한 논의가 최근 여러 나라에서 학계뿐만 아니라 일반 대중들의 주요 관심사가 되면서, 토마 피케티의 『21세기 자본』은 근년에 출간된 도서 가운데 가장 활발하게 논의된 정치 경제학 책이 되었다. 이 책은 일차적으로 소득과 부의 분배에 대한 책이다. 피케티는 방대한 자료를 집대성하여 소득과 부가 불평등하게 분배되는 과정을 설명할 수 있는 경제적, 사회적, 정치적 과정을 분석하였다. 그는 부가 불평등하게 분배되는 과정에서 r>g가 맡고 있는 역할을 분명하게 밝혔다. 그의 분석에 따르면 자본수익률을 의미하는 r과 경제 성장률을 의미하는 g 사이의 격차는 소득과 부의 불평등한 분배를 설명하는 중요한 요소다. 이 논문의 목적은 피케티의 『21세기 자본』이 경제적 불평등을 둘러싼 논의에 기여한 바를 밝히고, 그것이 고등학교 도덕 교육에서 불평등을 논의하는데 어떻게 응용될 수 있는가를 탐색하는 것이다.
